I really dislike the phrase "we win some, we lose some." This isn't a game of Uno. Obamacare's vindication redefines the country, which is which what we lost last night. Do you really believe future Republicans are going to undo Obamacare? Undo $20 Trillion debt or more? Establish Supreme Court Justices that can read, let alone understand the Constitution? (It was Bush who gave us Roberts! And then the long sad Republican history of Supremes). Are they going to protect religious freedom? Someone said it right: we are in a New America . The war is over. Freedom gone in principle, soon in practice. We don't need a new Republican Party. We need a new electorate.
Rob, what bothers me most is simply this: We are not a free country anymore. Not with John Roberts' betrayal and America's apathetic affirmation last night. We may live in a good spot in the world, but we aren't free. Not in principle And less and less so in practice. If the majority is happy to throw that away, I must say I am at a loss.
Here come 16,000 IRS agents and a total transparency to the Federal Government of what was left of your dignity. Your body was just nationalized. The Church will no longer be free to serve in civil society. The debt will rise to $20 Trillion plus. And this is just the beginning--no it's the middle. We are an electorate of fools. Optimism is having hard day.
Not rhetorical questions: How? How do we slow march back over Obamacare when "our own" Chief Justice cements it into law? Does that not by definition change everything as Kennedy said it would? We are less powerful in Washington than we were yesterday, the House notwithstanding. That's just one issue from the cluster. If the conservative's best, brightest, and most-funded can't do it in November 2012, when is it going to happen? I'm not trying to be negative, but how? It seems like all the exits to the madhouse slammed shut, just before we could get out.
Paladin, a return to the Christian world-view is what we need. Not more church attendance. This is not fringe. It is a huge part of what made the nation you want to save in the first place. A worldview that addresses the nature of the individual, the nature of freedom, the nature of wealth and economy, the nature of human thriving. Lewis said something like, "If we want rule that isn't tyranny, and obedience that isn't slavery" we will have to return to this worldview. But, Americans have rejected that worldview. Politics is downstream from culture, as it is said. So we may never "fix it." It's a heart issue. Tactics don't reach that deep. We're in serious trouble. But a conservative secularism is tributary to the greater secularism that is destroying the culture and its politics. It's just the way it is.
1. Pray that we'll love Truth again, no matter our race, class, status: "The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof". (Jeremiah 5:31) 2. Openly state the nature of the battle: Secularism versus Christianity in particular and Secularism versus Religion in general. People no longer want to recognize objective realities in economics, ethics, and anything else that has to do with human nature. 3. For those serious enough and willing to work at it, understand what CS Lewis meant in "The Abolition of Man." We're living it. Without a love for the moral law of God, we're left at the mercy of the elites (he called them Conditioners, a better term in light of the news media and university education today). 4. Pray for God's mercy, that He won't leave us to ourselves. It seems like He is. 5. Seek Christ.
Many things have changed. As Justice Kennedy said, the relationship of the individual to the government has changed. John Roberts changed jurisprudence--blew a hole in the Constitution. Your healthcare is now run by IPAB. Marriage as a legal definition is being twisted. The Government harasses the Church with mandates. And these are the beginnings, cemented into place tonight. Let alone the unforgiving realities of math on the economy. So a little time for mourning the death of good things is appropriate: The loss of the American Experiment. Yes, we'll have to pick ourselves up and live joyfully. But it will be in a different reality. The American one has passed. Telling yourself the truth is healthy.
Ryan held his own. It's hard to sit in a chair and get yelled at in your right ear for an hour and a half. Ryan was the junior man, and its hard to push back against someone older. I don't think Biden win anyone over to the ticket. He simply did a shout down. Am I wrong to think that women were not attracted at all to Biden? I guess time will tell. So much info to melt the mind. I think people will come away with impressions on likeability. Score Ryan.
Flownover, I can't/don't share your view about Roberts. We can't afford gambits when liberty, integrity, the Constitution, and oaths to do one's job are on the line. Roberts hurt the country, deeply. I would love to see all of Romney's promises come true regarding Obamacare. But when the roll of heros is called at such a moment, Roberts will not be named among them. His place is to hide his face among the weak, cowardly, and diminished souls like Stupak.
Tabula Rasa, as I read the post I couldn't help but think, "Yet, Roberts is the greater villain." Your comment sums it up perfectly. Roberts and Stupak go together, and in that order. I wish we could vote out the Chief Justice through an easier process than we have. I wonder if people like Roberts can feel shame? At least Peter went out and wept bitterly. But these guys?
Bottom Line: His ruling doctrine was "Uphold the law. " Then he rationalized from there. He abandoned his post which was "Defend the Constitution.". Why? Who knows. I sense cowardice. Something called the fear of man. But there could be other reasons.
I understand the feeling. May someone can write "A Practical Guide for Living Under Increasing Tyranny." or "How to Avoid the Leader's Eye and Keep Some of Your Stuff (and Breathe Easy.)" or "Remembering Freedom in and Age of Amnesia." or others...

Re: Conservatives Rejoice: We Are Winning the War
Obamacare. Obamacare. This is a political Waterloo. The Democratic Party, John Roberts, and the 2012 electorate have fundamentally transformed America. It has already happened. To say we are winning the war reminds me of Napolean on the old Bugs Bunny cartoon.
