Bio

I've been blogging on whatever pops into my head since February of 2006 over at The Scratching Post. I usually write about political, cultural and economic issues. My professional background is in scientific research, business management and marketing. I'm old enough to know that politics isn't the answer to very many of life's questions. Despite that, I continue to be interested in it. It's the intellectual popcorn of life.

ConservativeWanderer: Nattering Nabobs of Negativism showing up to declare that Obama is still going to trounce Romney... in 5... 4... · 1 hour ago

Not no more! After the first debate, I'm optimistic and happy to be proven wrong.

I'm sorry, but the title Maximum Leader is already taken. Please find another one.

K T Cat

It is indeed starting to be fun, even for a Romney pessimist like me. I'm thinking he's going to pull this one out!

Wealth and income are markers of behavior.

Beautiful story. Thanks for posting this.

Look, no one is going to give a rat's rear end about this until things start blowing up here, just as they're not going to care about the deficits until QEternity collapses and interest rates and/or inflation soars.

The problem isn't the logic of the statements or the sequence of events, but the current progressive-educated culture of America.

Dave said: But can we at least win the stinkin' election before we start inflicting all this pain on ourselves?

Right now the guy is losing. Complain about the polls all you want, but they're the scoreboard you have at the moment and they tell you he's losing. Peggy Noonan is deeply committed to his success and sees the thing slipping away for the same reasons many of us opposed him in the primaries:

This is not how big leaders talk, it’s how shallow campaign operatives talk: They slice and dice the electorate like that, they see everything as determined by this interest or that...

We are a big, complicated nation. And we are human beings. We are people. We have souls. We are complex. We are not data points. Many things go into our decisions and our political affiliations.

You have to be sophisticated to know that. And if you’re operating at the top of national politics, you’re supposed to be sophisticated.

To me, it's his vacuous, hyper-negative primary campaign all over again. Only this time he doesn't have a 10-1 money advantage and a pliant press.

Sisyphus: Peggy Noonan and Bill Kristol are showing themselves to be what we've long known they were, attention prostitutes.  · 1 hour ago

Oh please. Both Noonan and Kristol are experienced pros and they knew exactly what kind of criticism and bile their words were going to get them from the party and the candidates. They called it like they saw it. Right or wrong, they both showed courage and honesty.

I thought Peggy Noonan's column was spot on. She's not a member of the Romney campaign staff and her job is to report her professional impressions of what's going on.

I agree with her - the 47% remark wasn't wrong because it wasn't true, it was wrong because it betrayed his slicing and dicing of the electorate. This group won't do this and that group won't do that. Couple that with his years and years of flipfloppery and you get exactly what you have right now - a candidate who is utterly wrong for the moment.

Look, I support the guy and I'm going to vote for him, but don't fool yourselves. He's not one of us at a time when one of us is what was needed. I'm still hoping he can pull it out and I think he'd do a reasonable job as president, but don't close your eyes and ears to people who've got something painful to say.

One of the strangest things I had to deal with in noise cancellation were harmonics from power supplies. Oh sure, you had tight control over your RF emissions, but when a power supply went wonky, you could get all kinds of crazy results. Not saying that happens here, but it's something I think of whenever the attendants tell me to turn the thing off.

I've come to the conclusion that there is a huge disconnect between our culture and reality. Earning and having are separated by government intervention and that intervention is only possible through massive borrowing. Don't worry, though. It can't go on forever.

sven141: As a commercial and former military pilot I'll play devil's advocate.  Cell phones do cause static interference over the radio even while not in active use.  It's immediately obvious someone has there cell phone on due to the distinctive static.   · 8 hours ago

As a licensed radio expert, I'll tell you that with the proper equipment (known as a filter), the interference can be removed. · 1 hour ago

As a former radio designer and a fellow with patents in the field of digital signal processing (how's that for egotistical chest beating?), you're right, but you're wrong. Yes, in a perfect world, you could install filters, but on an airplane, installing anything is phenomenally expensive. It is an enormous pain to pull electronics out, modify them and then put them back. You'd have to retrofit everything, even those aircraft that date back decades. Who knows what kind of gear they've got.

My first reaction to this is to wonder just where the interference comes from. You'd think the spectrum of the various devices would be relatively separated. Still, if sven says he hears it, then he hears it.

Well, that wraps up the South for us.

Foxfier: Part of the ire isn't so much that you keep making ads-- although for a while it seemed like most of the podcastwas constant ads-- as the way y'all were complaining about people who DID subscribe asking for a slight turn-down in "sign up!" pitches.  (Especially when you'realready in a video game style format.  Highly simplified one, but it's free-to-hear and then you can buy the upgrade.  No gold coins needed, although my Mastercard does have those coin symbols on the front.)

Think of it like taxes: at some point between 0% and 100%, there's a great number.  Raising the rate will get more money for a while, but if you increase the rate too much, folks change their behavior.

Hey Foxie! I didn't know you were here! Awesomeness!

Oh. I suppose I should say something about the post. Umm .... I like the podcasts and don't mind the ads. I'll recommend membership to people.

This is nothing new. The left sees itself as fighting an implacable, crazed foe when it comes to gays. They think anyone who questions the assertion that gay and straight are equivalent in every way are one small step from releasing packs of rabid German Shepherds onto the local Gay Pride parade. It's completely irrational and there's practically no hope of normal conversation. It's like talking to a schizophrenic. They see and hear things that aren't there.
