When I was an undergrad at UCLA I had several progressive classmates tell me that the government must subsidize poor women's right to choose an abortion otherwise the government was violating their Consitutional rights.

Furthermore they asserted that to not provide funding for the arts, like putting crucifixes in urine, was violating people's free speech rights and the 1st Amendment.

I then asked then if they believed if poor people should be given vouchers for buying guns and they emphatically said "No!". I then accused them of violating poor women their Second Amendment right to bear arms and relegating the poor to buying cheap Saturday Night Specials from back alley gun dealers.

All hell broke loose.

If non-citizens can vote then let's just change the name to United States of Anybody and be done with it. More bread and circuses for everyone.

Boy, are we choking under the tyranny of stupidity.

Jamie Lockett: So separate but equal? I think you entirely miss the point of the article. It goes BEYOND the legal consequences.
I never thought I would see the day that conservatives would resist a group desperately begging for the chance to form families.

Mind-boggling.

So can anybody form a family with whomever and how many they choose?

Zafar,

I don't think you really believe this. If someone's belief system is to marry their sibling or marry multiple partners, my guess is you'd have a problem with that which would mean you were attacking their belief system, a pointless argument and vulgar.

What you really mean to say is you find it pointless and vulgar to attack religion and belief systems you find acceptable which makes you no different than the people who only support traditional marriage.

Zafar: I amnot criticising or attacking Catholicism.  I think directly criticising or attacking anybody's religion or belief system is both pointless and vulgar.

As a proud UCLA grad of poli sci, this is par for the course for what should be expected at the University of Spoiled Children. In all seriousness, when I attended UCLA as poli sci undergrad, my fellow conservatives (there were a few) and I were constantly trying to figure out the politcal persuasions of our professors. The quality professors, like Mr Groseclose, kept their political leanings rather hidden. The hacks, who ultimatetely made no lifelong educational impression, openly tried to indoctrinate us with Leftist blather like this USC hack.Fight on Tommy Trojan, fight on!

From the Heritage Foundation:

The estimate of insured losses from Sandy comes in around $20 billion—but the total aid package proposed is three times that amount. Roughly $28 billion of the request is marked forfuture disaster-mitigation projects.

The bill includes funding for Head Start, the federal day care program. As Heritage’s Lindsey Burke, the Will Skillman fellow in education policy, explains, some Head Start centers may need repairs from hurricane damage, but handing the program $100 million—as the Sandy aid package would—is a large expenditure that deserves more scrutiny.

The House needs to retool this bill.

HOWEVER, if they do not then shame on the GOP and Boehner, and yes, Tommy you are a thousand times correct it was and is a terrible political miscalculation!

It won't change the fact that Gov Christie is a blowhard though.

I don't recall making an argument or counter-argument in the post or the thread.

I do know that some of the money is not for repair but to take measure to guard against a later storm.   · 15 minutes ago

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.: I wonder why Chris Christie isn't mad at all the legislators who inserted irrelevant pork into the bill. It's weird, though no doubt it's perfectly acted outrage theater.

I'm just not the best audience for outrage theater. · 15 hours ago

Agreed, but was this really the bill to use to take a stand on that by Boehner?   This bill?

What a terrible political miscalculation by him.

Seems like saying Boehner made a "terrible political miscalculation" is an argument. I don't think it is a miscalculation.

Is it just the number that's the problem?  I understand the damage estimate exceeded $70 Billion. · 2 hours ago

If your number is correct, that it's $70B in damage, then all the more reason this is a bad bill!!! How does roughly $33B in spending through 2015 begin to address $70B in damage???? Your counter-agrument only magnifies that this bill is a sad hash which needs to be re-tinkered.

It typifies the typical thoughtless approach that wastes money and in the end doesn't solve the problem it is supposed to address.

Gov. Christie's response further magnifies that he's a blowhard and a boor.

The bill is bad government AND bad politics for the GOP.

It's par for the course with this guy. He's not the worst leader the GOP could have but man is he disappointing. · 6 minutes ago

Agree completely.  I like him as a person and could vote for him as my representative, but leadership just seems to be missing from his toolbox these days. · 37 minutes ago

Folks, this bill is $60 billion!! I know that seems a drop in the bucket with trillion dollar deficits but that's how we got to an era of trillion $ deficits.

Andy, only a tiny fraction of the bill is actually spent in 2013. From Reuters:

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated about $8.97 billion of the Senate bill would be spent in 2013, with another $12.66 billion spent in 2014 and $11.59 billion spent in 2015.

Let's not bash Boehner on this one. It's a bad bill and Boehner was right to pull it.

Always love a good Pink Floyd post. Boiling it down three is difficult. Wish You Were Here for sure. However after that it gets tricky because I find the conclusion of Dark Side of the Moon, from Us and Them, to Any Colour You Like, to Brain Damage/Eclipse, as good as it gets. They flow together into one great masterpiece.
