Most of these predictions are laughably off-base. However, a couple of these SF writers hit pretty close to the mark.

Wow! Only one mention of Men at Work? I would argue that this is probably the best book you can read in order to deepen your understanding of the game, and it's written in George Will's inimitable style.

Two more short favorites if you are interested in the craft of the game: Tony Gwynn's "Art of Hitting" and Ted Williams' "Science of Hitting."
