Obviously, Magnitsky's death is just a tip of the iceberg. A group called "Sitting Russia" has hundreds of well-known cases where people are not just imprisoned, but put in terrible conditions in order to "make a deal" with prosecutors or simply bribe their way out.

A new trial is under way, eerily similar to the trial of Kohdorkovsky. This time the victim is Alexey Navalny, famous for coining the widely used moniker of Putin's ruling party - "Party of Crooks & Thieves". The trial is going in Kirov, analogue of Duluth, S.D. Putin hopes that opposition will be subdued given such remote place.

Ironically, the courthouse is called Regional Courthouse of Lenin Region, city of Kirov.

I was about to write the same... late for a minute :) You can't imagine the rolling laughter that it caused in Russian independent publications!

My crystal ball shows a pick up of two... I think that Virginia, Ohio and Wisconsin is too optimistic

For what it's worth, my Presidential crystal ball shows around 290 (Barone, minus Pennsylvania and Iowa).

I spent half of my life in the Soviet Union. Not the vicious world-conquering Soviet Union of Lenin and Stalin, but the decaying, "rotting" Soviet Union of Brezhnev. It was almost the socialism of Western Europe. So, when I saw this story titled Free cheese can only be found in a mousetrap, I wished I had the writing skills to come up with the same...

I grew in the world of "popular democracy" (as opposed to the world of fake, or bourgeois democracy). The official name of North Korea is still "People's Democratic Republic of North Korea" - don't know Korean, but in Russian "People's" is an adjective to the noun "Democracy" - that's why I translated it as "popular democracy"

The way I remember somebody explaining it to Americans was "Democracy to Popular Democracy is like chair to electric chair"

@Pig Man - let's step back from self-serving conclusions. I am not going to accuse liberals of trying to enable fraudulent voting; and you are not going to accuse GOP of trying to suppress the vote.

Let's start with facts. What voter suppression you are talking about? Voter ID laws? You really believe that a requirement to show ID is akin to Jim Crow days? I am not arguing - I am trying only to clarify. Give me an example where and how such law prevents anybody from voting.

And by the way, I never heard Limbaugh "shock-jocking"; let alone cussing. You can agree or argue with him; where as Moore puts forward some incoherent ramblings. I understand - it's different genre; but the comparison is really bizarre!

Fixed, thank you :)

DocJay: Good Lord that must have been maddening.

As far as fearing the situation here.  I feel we have an indoctrinating teachers union that must be broken. · 3 hours ago

Interesting, indoctrination in the Soviet Union achieved the opposite results. We ended up not believing anything our newspapers were writing; TV anchors were announcing, or ideology teachers were saying. We grew up cynical and unscrupulous - the most embarrassing was to be considered a gullible sucker.

It's amazing that high school and college kids here really don't have any BS radar! Indoctrination does marvels :(

I wonder why we haven't see Patraeus. Actually, Dept of State issued "Press Statement" and "Remarks" to balance what Clinton said in public. Daily Mail provided a detailed analysis a few weeks ago.

For me, the biggest insult was that this administration took the country for idiots. At least, Stalin didn't assume that people will believe that Trotsky wanted to build a tunnel from London to Baghdad. Obama really thinks that people will believe just because he said so! That's the very definition of narcissism! I can see why Clinton and Patraeus (strange bedfellows) wouldn't defy credulity together!

BUT WAIT - THERE IS MORE! The ad is essentially lifted from Putin's ad! The concept is identical (you do it the first time with someone you love - Dear Leader!) The text is very similar (American girl - and I also have no clue who she is - plays the roles of both the Russian maiden and her Miss Cleo). If anybody needs more detailed translation - I'll be happy to provide!

This is the 63rd comment - if somebody pointed it before (Foreign Policy did), I apologize :)

Israel Pickholtz: Isn't there a Senate race? · 7 hours ago

To quote myself, I expect California to be a swing state in Romney's 2016 re-election.

Unless they're seriously disreputable, all endorsements are good endorsements, and a lot of people respect Adams. · 57 minutes ago

Sure! and if this causes some pothead in Miami to stay home on the election day or vote for Roseanne Barr - who am I to argue. All I am saying that I don't have to respect Adams or Sheehan if they for some weird reason decided to support Romney.

It's similar to situation in Russia right now where many members of Anti-Putin coalition can't stand each other (politically)
