Love NetFlix, but the streaming version lacks alot of great titles.  Back a few weeks ago on Ricochet, there was a thread on classic movies.  Checked if many were on NetFlix.  Believe only one was.  Of course, there's alot more there than classic movies, but it would be nice to have access...

Agree that enthusiasts can be annoying (movie buffs do that to me), because they focus on technical stuff.  I like the quote attributed to Duke Ellington - if it sounds good, it is good.  Conversely, if it don't move you, don't bother.  However, like anything outside our comfort zones, classical music can be an acquired taste.  If you get some exposure, you'll find yourself remembering the best parts, and wanting to hear it again.  Then you'll be on your way... happened to me!

And yes, Mr. Nordlinger is indeed a gifted describer of music!

About 15 years ago, heard (NPR report) that many convenience stores began piping in classical music to discourage loitering.  Was reported to work like a charm.  Still need evidence classical music drives people away?

Not long afterward, was in Port Authority in NYC, and, sure enough, they had classical music playing - "Fantasia para un gentilhombre", by Rodridgo.  One of my favorites ... seriously.

Words to that effect could in fact pass through his lips.  He would never say them, only sigh them...

You hit it the second time -- they don't believe in good and evil... they just don't trust people.  Their model of the ideal social arrangement is that we should all be marionettes -- is safer, cleaner, neater, more enlightened, if we're directed by the wiser.

We've been doing solar basically since the beginning...

Nearly every energy source available stores what was originally solar energy in other forms.  Fossil fuels store solar energy rearranged into hydrocarbon chemical bonds (geological forces also likely played a role in their formation).  Even plants (like trees) we burned for fuel are solar energy stored in chemical bonds.  Weather and ocean currents are driven by radiant energy input from the sun.  So all those wind farms are harnessing solar energy.  Hydroelectric power comes from solar energy storing potential energy by moving water from lower to higher altitudes through evaporation and condensation (i.e., rain).

Maybe this is a stretch, but even fissile materials like uranium were forged from lighter elements in now-dead stars that spread their wares through space by going supernova...
