Re: Classical Music - some thoughts and questions
Doctor Robert
mike in state college: About 15 years ago, heard (NPR report) that many convenience stores began piping in classical music to discourage loitering. Was reported to work like a charm. Still need evidence classical music drives people away?
Not long afterward, was in Port Authority in NYC, and, sure enough, they had classical music playing - "Fantasia para un gentilhombre", by Rodridgo. One of my favorites ... seriously. · May 16, 2013 at 4:29am
The Rodrigo "Fantasia", like his "Concierto de Aranjuez", are certainly serious art music but they are not classical music in the forbidding sense of Brahms and Beethoven; they are too tuneful and accessible. More like Boston Pops stuff. · May 18, 2013 at 3:13pm
Like most composers for the guitar, Rodrigo was certainly not on the same level as Beethoven or Brahms, but he was pretty darned good for the 20th century. As you say, tuneful and accessible, which to me is not a drawback! He did write some more "challenging" pieces like Invocation and Dance (also one of my favorites). His stuff is really a challenge to play, though...
