This is one of those things I certainly feel and hope is right. I will tell you one thing though, I probably need to go into the Marines at 18 and have someone kick my immature butt. However, getting married at 21 to my dear wife certainly helped me to grow up quickly. And having someone that I've always considered my compliment has helped me greatly in my growth.

Agree with all of your arguments, Denise. However, the logical side of me has been overtaken with cynicism of late. I'm wondering if there's anything we can do to reach those who seem to have been crippled by the handout.

Looks like an absolute blast. Good folks in our Ricochet community.

Nicely framed, Mr. S.

I couldn't agree more! During my politically formative high school years, Milt had a big influence on my thinking.

Jack Warren

Agreed, Illiniguy! I remember listening to Milt during my high school days in the 70's. While my friends tooled around in their Chevy Novas with WLS blaring, I was listening to Milt Rosenberg (I know, a pretty sad indicator of my geekdom). What a fascinating array of guests! It really opened my mind to subjects I would not have otherwise explored.

Nicely done!

I've been with NRO since the beginning. I do NOT enjoy pop-ups that are forcing their way in on the NRO site the last view months. Mind you, I do not mind ads at all, but I absolutely dislike these pop-ups.

I would have loved it it they would have started with Lincoln's first meeting with Stanton at the courthouse in Cincinnati, where Stanton refers to Lincoln as "that Gorilla." Weaving in the disdain that Lincoln's rivals had for him in the beginning and growing into a vast respect would have been a wonderful story to somehow tell.

It's not the Ivy League, but I did some pre-election checking on our local institution, Illinois State University, and the results were 20 Obama donors, 0 Romney donors.

Jack Warren

Dionne is a genius! This has never been chronicled in the history of elections! Give the man a Pulitzer..aw heck -- a Nobel Peace Prize.

Jack Warren

I agree completely with your analysis. As I heard this story earlier today while driving down the road, tears came to my eyes.

Jack Warren

Atta boy, Dave!

In this case, I agree with Richard -- colleges certainly should be allowed to set their own policies. Of course there are the obvious reasons, but almost as important is the stark divide it would set between many institutions, providing even more criteria for a decision on where to send your kids and your money.

I'm afraid that Diane's well thought out argument is a distraction, much as the whole Obama birth certificate thing. The previous commenters here are correct -- just let Mr. Buffett cut a check to the treasury. Or to paraphrase Dennis Miller's oft-repeated question -- how can guys like Warren Buffett sleep at night believing they didn't give their "fair share"?

I believe it was Tim Pawlenty that pointed out that Minnesota set up an account for such voluntary donations. To date the balance in that account is $0.
