Bio

Business owner with a strong interest in Eastern Europe, politics, and sports. We'll get along famously if you enjoy a healthy respect for a sound P&L statement, politicians with financial acumen, and all things Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Jim Harbaugh, and Coach "K."

Schrodinger's Cat: Ask yourself, would these family members support you in the future if you leave the church? If not, I see no reason why you should endure an unpleasant evening for appearances sake.

I can relate to this line of thinking because as a child, I had to endure being a bridesmaid for a cousin I disliked intensely. (My mother made me.)

With that said, Amy, I suggest you go for your sake. Sorry to say, I am a believer in keeping up appearances because your absence will unfortunately present you (in the eyes of your relatives) as both petty and envious. What's a couple of hours, anyway?

Go to the wedding and then leave this particular church.

RightinChicago: The only reason he "loves" his family and few friends is that they are attatched to him. As far as everyone else, he feels indifference at best and malice at worst. · May 19, 2013 at 11:35pm

I completely agree with this and one of the things I would urge all voters to do is to examine the personal family background of a candidate before voting. It does give one a sense of the psychological and emotional temperament; see William Clinton if you don't believe this is important.

Umbra Fractus: Overplayed: Anything by The Ramones, The White Stripes, The Rolling Stones, Slayer, Tool, Pearl Jam... There's no shortage of "classic" bands that I just don't get.

Funny thing about the good stuff, UF and all you Pachelbel critics; it has a tendency to be played over and over again!
Full disclosure: I did walk down the aisle to Canon in D and I'm not in the least bit ashamed.

Red, I continue to quote my main source on all such matters, Ayaan Hirsi Ali: "The word Islam translates into English as 'submission' and that alone makes it incompatible with Western Civilization."

Pseudodionysius: Judges versus Bureaucrats.

Iran versus Iraq.

Its a pity they can't both lose.

Before Chief Roberts' ruling on Obamacare as a "tax," I would have voted for the Supremes.  Scalia and Alito continue to remain my heroes, but I agree that partisanship has infected every branch of the federal government.

I will continue to encourage a more engaged interest in state and local elections; especially as we are able to vote here in Florida to renew terms of State Supreme Court judges.

They were an OK pop band, but not the endall beall of rock.  They came along as the baby boomers were just starting to rebel and were lucky enough or smart enough to play into that emotion.   · in 2 minutes

Before the Beatles nobody sounded like the Beatles.  Since the Beatles everybody sounds like the Beatles.

I think that sound has become so familiar to us that we forget the creation of it was genius.

I agree with you Casey but am stillbowled over by the genius. They never stopped growing as musicians. · 1 minute ago

And according to this story, John Lennon never stopped growing politically, either. · 57 minutes ago

The whole was truly greater than the sum of its parts.

McCartney took the edges off the earlier radical ideology; Lennon put some musical gravitas behind the insipid pop melodies. George Harrison added both depth and originality to the songwriting and Ringo was just cute!

Never will there be a more prolific or successful collaboration than the Fab Four.

DocJay: Two votes for Vitamin J.  Interesting.  I'm picking Eric Holder because he's a gun grabbing racist. · 3 minutes ago

Better be careful Doc; he'll post a gang of Black Panthers in front of your home after they get off duty from manning polling places.

And yet a third vote for Jarrett. She knows more about the shenanigans of this administration than even the wife. Besides, she is quoted as saying to Obama in Game Changer, "I love living your life." Pheew!

And at least he wrote one good song, Tiny Dancer.

Noooo........ Not................. Tiny Dancer....

Ok, so shoot me because my second favorite movie of all time Almost Famous features this song in a wonderful scene on the tour bus. :)

Sure, but what is the reward/penalty for a moral/immoral act? In an increasingly secular world, what is the mechanism to behave correctly in this situation? A fear of getting caught? Perhaps ,after all, he is behaving in a way that doesn't inherently "feel wrong" to him (speculating, of course). Are we to rely on an undefined, internal empathy that we assume is naturally there for all?

The reason we don't fear being murdered in broad daylight by every person we pass by in downtown New York is a vestige of natural virtues existing in our fellow citizens.

I would add that life in a Newark/South Bronx/ East L.A. community is not an enviable one. People with any common sense (leaving moral sensibility aside) realize that criminal life creates a haunted and hunted existence that truly doesn't pay in the end.

BTW, Pseudo, New York City has become far too expensive for criminals. Only the uber-wealthy can afford to live there and the Michael Bloombergs of the world have every intention of protecting the taxpayers who fund his progressive programs. Crime has never been lower in NYC, even under the venerable Giuliani.

Denise McAllister: ET--I think what undermines the military by having women in combat is that women are naturally weaker and men are naturally protective. Men will be distracted by their impulses to defend women as well as to compensate for their physical weaknesses.

And don't forget about Mother Nature. Good post (!) and a topic we should all be discussing.

Denise McAllister: ET---"Before Colin Powell became a Democrat, he came out against gays in the military and women in combat zones because these specific demograpic groups can undermine (through no fault of their own, necessarily) the focus of the mission. Let us remember that the military does not exist to provide equal opportunity for citizens; it exists solely to protect citizens."I agree. I don't think women should be in combat. · in 2 minutes

Even Israel, that has been at the forefront of this issue (due to necessity), would agree with us.
