I just don't see why a political party would nominate someone that could not run for re-election four years later under the 22nd Amendment. The bench would have to be very shallow and I don't think if he loses this year there would be much enthusiasm for him in 2016.
Bushel Basket: As soon as I posted, I thought "this guy has such similar tastes, am I sure he didn't list these books?" I went back and saw that you do have "Alone" listed. For what it's worth, I think "Visions of Glory" is just as good. From what I have heard, Paul Reid has done a very good job of continuing on in Manchester's style and outline with "Defender of the Realm." · 1 hour ago
I agree. I focused onAlonesolely because it tells the story of the thirties and the run-up to WWII, which is filled with drama. But, on the other hand, was there ever a time when Churchill's life wasn't dramatic?
As to the new volume, I always worry when one person finishes another writer's work. We can hope that Manchester left such good notes that the final volume lives up to the first two. · 20 hours ago
I think all fans of the series are worried! Apparently, Manchester did write a good portion of it before he died. From interviews, I believe Mr. Reid is aware of the pressure on him to deliver!

The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill by William Manchester.
This is a three volume series. The first volume is "Visions of Glory" that covers his childhood through 1931. The second is "Alone;" this volume is devoted only to his decade in "the wilderness," 1932-1940. The third volume is due out in November. William Manchester died before he could finish it, before his death he assigned a friend named Paul Reid to complete it for him. The final volume is titled "Defender of the Realm" and covers 1941 through Churchill's death.
The first two are among my favorite books. Very much looking forward to the final volume.
Caddell's criticisms of the Romeny campaign are certainly worth consideration.
Before melting down in panic, however, keep in mind that he not only advised Carter, but according to Wikipedia, "He was also a marketing consultant on Coca-Cola's disastrous New Coke campaign."
