Bio

Like my father, I drive nails for a living. This is after a number of years teaching in the public schools, a few years in radio to get through college, an MS degree in computing, and many post graduate hours in Evolutionary Biology.

I've also worked as a driver, a wrangler, and a river guide in the Southwest among other things.

I've been on a paleo dig in Wyoming, a reef study on Roatan Island, a butterfly study in Ecuador, a lemur study in Madagascar and had the wonderful opportunity to visit many other parts of the world.

Most days I think that I am the only conservative in Boulder Colorado. And some days I know I am.

Fortunately I have the option of working on a house in the much more moderate Grand County Colorado. I spend about a half of my time there.

I've been writing a blog since April of 2002. If you can call poorly spelled, snarky comments writing. It is at www.americankestrel.com/blog/.

And I spend every second I can with my twin grand daughters.

Remember the Al Gore sighs? He was poorly mic'd and the listeners caught every one of them. ... And found them arrogant.

Good ad.

Sorry.

I came down to take care of the grand daughters for a few days so that means that I'll be back in the mountains  - working this weekend.

Sounds like great fun. But whatever you do, don't talk about Paul Ryan.

American Kestrel

Geez ... I would love to.

I'll be coming out of the mountains after a week of work but I'll make every effort.

I should be able to firm this up later.

Good catch Diane.

The people the government deliberately gave guns to had immediate potential to use them illegally. After all these people are drug runners.

It would be a stretch to assume that like most law abiding individuals they would be used for recreation or the protection of home and family.

He's right - people do kill people. But you shouldn't help them do it.

It's probably never wise to be complicit in a murder.

Sorry, I only watch about 6 minutes of t.v. a year except whey the Rockies are on. And they are playing so poorly that even the local sports bars will not show them unless you make a special request. But ...

Nick Offerman lives the character. And the reason why is that he has real world experience. He owns a woodworking shop and makes fine furniture.  He's a guy's guy. He spends some of his days working with large, loud and dangerous machinery and many of the people he works with fit that same description.

Public radio and television is probably the most serious problem. Not because they are good but because they are everywhere. In many of the most remote places you can find an NPR affiliate or signal. They were originally confined to a small part of the FM spectrum.

Growing up in the west and having spent 6 years in radio I miss the truly local stories in less populated areas. I miss the farm report. I miss the small town high school scores.

De-funding might help but it is actually a fairly small amount. They also get donated funds from otherwise government funded organizations. Possibly that could be stopped.

The big piece of the pie is that they are get licensed for free.  There should be a way to get ‘real’ locals (as opposed to translator non-manned stations whose broadcast originates from  miles away) to create the broadcasting. Licensing for free very local content by locals in geographic areas that really need it might be an answer. And it would be a very good way to start.

It's my understanding that many people are bring cards to read. That's probably what I'll have to do.

I guess I've always appreciated the mass because it contained a little history and a little mystery.

I hope that won't change. It'll probably be tough for me at the age of 63 to memorize the new one for a while.

I like it!

I've said that in the atmosphere of the other GOP candidate choices. We have to go with somebody and, right now, nobody is really very appealing.

But the good news is that the legacy media will have to change the dance step with each new front runner. At some point they may decide that there are too many people to attack.

Gov. Perry needs a few solid debate performances. Geez ...

I think that you probably answered it.

'It was a  beautiful Sunday in DC' ...

Why hang out in a place that is a lot less clean than when you arrived. Especially of you're the one who is expected to clean it up.

Why not wander over to Georgetown for lunch and watch the people.

It's not like they really had any defined objectives or purpose to hold them there.

BTW it was a beautiful day in Colorado as well.

Good catch!
