Bio

Like the estimable Lileks I was born and raised in Fargo. When the folks moved to Utah in '74 I figured I'd better go with them since I was only 12 yrs old.  My wife and I moved to the Twin Cities in '97 with 4 children in tow (the fifth was born in MN).  After spending 20 yrs in software sales I struck out on my own a few years back and now own a successful medical services business.

My daddy was a John Birch sympathizer so I grew up on the far right and may have supported Ron Paul in my younger days.  I was very excited to vote for Reagan in my first election and although I'm still very conservative, I have become more pragmatic as I realize the Gipper ain't comin' back.

Oh, and I'm Mormon too - if that matters to anyone (does to me, obviously!)

Although I don't think it will ultimately make a difference in the fate of our country, Ricochet has given me great comfort knowing that there are still sizable numbers of smart conservatives out there.  The highlights for me are:

  1. The Ricochet CofC which truly allows us to disagree without being disagreeable - absolutely unique on the web.
  2. Reading the astoundingly intelligent posts by the members (you expect it from the contributors, I suppose)
  3. Being able to "dialogue" with the aforementioned contributors - many of whom are truly big shots!
  4. Being able to discuss topics about which I'm passionate like politics and religion
  5. Last but not least, the podcasts!

We may be going over the cliff in this country, but it helps to have like-minded people to share the ride...

Leviathan is only interested in your money.  As long as you pay taxes your citizenship status is irrelevant.  They just want the money to fund their power grab.

KC Mulville: [Continued...]

Once we calculate the measurements (how many tickets, how often, how expensive) for each quality, we store those summaries into what database guys call “cubes.” And then, here’s the cool thing: we don’t have to keep the detailed raw records anymore. We only have to keep the summary totals for each quality.

Remember, a dataset of a billion records can be summarized into one line. With OLAP, we can keep the one line (or however many lines we want dimensions for), and dump the billions of raw records. And if you do your OLAP design with a little foresight, you can have small summary datasets that give you every answer you could possibly look for in a large raw detail set. Searches go quickly and more efficiently.

Data technology has been developing for years … it’s not like a big stack of paper reports that some poor guy has to read one at time. · 3 hours ago

Stop it, KC!  You're giving me flashbacks to my days at Oracle...

So MJ, do you believe that someone who suffers from same sex attraction but does not act on those feelings is sinful?  If a boy has these feelings but does not act on them are you saying he should still be barred from Boy Scouts?  Please clarify.

Well, this explains why I'm pigging out amongst the stacks of old newspapers in my living room while feeling great sadness due to switching out my 12 pack of Mountain Dew a-day habit for cocaine!

It could be...depends what "pedagogical" means

What we need is a drastic overhaul of the civil service system in this country so that criminals like Lois Lerner can't abuse their office and then take a paid vacation at taxpayer expense.

What we'll get is the status quo with federal employees who are essentially bulletproof.

I imagine the Obama administration knew about Petraeus' affair when they nominated him.  How nice to have a pre-built blackmail/scapegoat lever in such a key official.

Of course if Petraeus thought Obama wouldn't find out about and use the affair against him then he's not quite the military genius some make him out to be.

It might hurt the Dems if the nitwit 51% who vote Democrat paid any attention to this stuff.

Let's face it, half the people who voted for Obama think the IRS did a good thing in suppressing conservative groups and the other half have no idea that this even happened.

Edward,

Why can't you simply tell the truth of your religion without attacking other faiths?  By all means, preach the gospel as you understand it long and loud all the day long but when you then go on the attack against other faiths well, I don't think that's constructive or enlightened.

Obviously there are theocratic differences between my faith and yours and between my faith and Islam.  You tell me what you believe and I'll tell you what I believe - I do it with my Muslim friends all the time.  But if I proceed to tell you your faith is wrong here and here and here you might get a little offended.  So would I.  So would Muslims.

Your failure to attack my faith does not mean you agree with it - it just means that you are being civil.

Basil Fawlty: It seems to me that the much-maligned civil service protections have done their job here.  Does anyone doubt that, absent these protections, a few GS-13 drones would have been thrown to the wolves and any managers absolved of responsibility?  The Pendleton Civil Service Act was designed with the Obama administration in mind.  · 15 minutes ago

Perhaps the drones could refuse their manager's illegal orders and turn whistleblower.

I fear the drones were only too happy to carry out those orders from above.

Frankly, Red, I reject the premise of your question and am very uncomfortable with the bashing of Islam contained in this thread.

Of course I feel that my religion (LDS) contains more truth than others or I would not be a member and I imagine most Catholics and other Christians feel the same way.  But that does not give anyone the right to tear down or denigrate someone else's faith.

I also understand everyone's frustration with fanatics who commit atrocities in the name of Islam and the geopolitical mess in the Middle East but even that does not give us the right to attack other people's faith.  I know several good people who are Muslim and I would put their behavior up against anyone from another faith - including Christianity.

I'm dismayed by the mob mentality and lack of true Christian understanding I see in this thread...

You've got to love the racket that federal employees have going - not only can they do as they please with little to no oversight, it is darn near impossible to fire them!

Tell me again how our country survives?
