For a while, you can get elected by promising the people free stuff. If you don't bother to have any grandchildren, the promise is hard to keep.

I think I saw some research that showed that middle-of-the-road undecided voters have lower IQs. I don't mean that in a sneering way. I mean that the message has to be simple and very direct to win those votes. probably it helps to be handsome too.

I lived in Kansas and I don't think their hospitals are dangerous by any measure.

It s my theory that TV created youth culture. Before TV, only adult culture was legitimate. TV gave youth culture a stage on which youthful behavior, which previously had existed but had not been "recognized", could be be displayed and gain a kind of legitimacy. Everything bad followed.

Another factor may be that much of the world has modernized extensively in the last 40 years and you can live, more or less, as you would in the USA, if you don't mind occasional power failures. Internet access is also a big factor. And satellite tv. They make the boondocks seem like the big city.
