Bio

Born, raised, and educated in the Midwest.  I've been a resident of nine states including 18 years in California-- split evenly between the Bay Area and Southern CA.  Now that I can live wherever I wish to live I'm very happy to reside in The Palmetto State.

Worked my way through school as a gardener, janitor, chauffeur, oil refinery boilermaker/ pipe-fitter.

School teacher for a couple years... radio morning man for another few... entertainment business executive from 1970's - 2000.  Private market trader today.

Skeptically optimistic.

My Groseclose PQ Score is 3

My Charles Murray Bubble Score is 54

Maggie Somavilla:

My absolute favorite sketch was Johnny Carson playing a confused President Reagan in a conversation with James Baker. It was an update on the Abbott and Costello "Who's on First", with puns on the names Hu, Yasser, Watt, and possibly others. I always liked to imagine that Reagan saw it and laughed more than anyone. Peter, can  you confirm? · 21 minutes ago

Here it is.

The newest member of our family 1s 14 weeks old and being crate trained.  From her first day here I marveled at her intelligence.  But in the last week I found out the curse of that bright brain, Troy.  She too has learned that at 4AM even a "dry run" gets a treat from a sleepy man.

His friend, Elton John, gently chided him about how the song didn't exactly match John's actual lifestyle by singing this parody verse:

Imagine six apartments
It isn't hard to do
One is full of fur coats
Another's full of shoes.

At another juncture John was angry about how much money his farm was losing/ costing him.  A friend started to sing Imagine to him.  John's snarling response was, "It's only an effing song!"

Great post built around a very sad event.

As a pre-teen I was a collector of 45's.  The first that wasn't a novelty song like Sheb Wooley's "Purple People Eater" or David Seville's Chipmunks efforts was The Beach Boys "Surfer Girl" b/w "Little Deuce Coupe" which I bought the week after my 10th birthday in July 1963 with the dollar I got from Grandma & Grandpa as a present.

My older sister bought LP's and let me listen to them so I didn't get my first album until 1966: The Rolling Stones- Aftermath.  Thousands would follow.

I never bought tapes so never had a first one.  By the time CD's were introduced I was a record company executive and wasn't buying music.

My next MP3 download will be my first one.

RIP, Adam.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.: I would tell you what the Nationals manager has to say about this hit - Ursula Hennessey alerted me to it -- but it's not CoC compliant. · 25 minutes ago

Just for the record, that was the General Manager, Mike Rizzo not field manager Davey Johnson.  I doubt that any manager, all of whom expect pitchers to hit guys from time to time, would pop off like Rizzo did.  Certainly not Davey who was thrown at by some of the best as an MLB player.

You keep it below the letters and afterward your comment is along the lines of, "Hey, that one got away from me."  Harper made Hamels pay for it this time.  Plus, in the 3rd Hamels got HBP'd when he squared up to bunt a man over.  Balance was returned.

If MLB suspends him it should only be for 5 games so it just results in him having his next start pushed back a day.

I miss SF.  I used to drive around and laugh and laugh and laugh.  A beautiful place full of people who take advanced nitwittery to a new level.

Great choice, Lance.

My theory for the pessimism often expressed by the contributors you named the "Men of Ricochet" is that, for the most part, they live in states that Romney won't carry.  Of course, he won't need to carry them to win.

Personally I think, if it's a 2 way race with no significant 3rd party candidate(s), that Mitt will win by double digits in the popular vote and handily in the electoral college.  Of course, it's just that sort of cock-eyed optimism that caused me to move away from California.

Bob Cotten:  But the flag is ours no more.  It belongs to the skinheads, the nazis and the tatoo parlors of an incredibly sad,  downward evolution in the culture.

Then take it back.  Whenthishappened, should we have just shrugged and went "Oh well, it belongs to them now"?

The vast, vast majority of southerners that love that flag have no desire for secession again. It's a symbol of a southern culture within a larger American context. You'll find that many of those people volunteered for the US military, proudly. But the more effort is made to take that flag away from them, the more resentful they get. · 12 hours ago

And, of course, the US flag flew over slavery for far more years than any of the various flags of the short-lived CSA.

Lucky for Bo, the dog-eater-in-chief found canine meat to be "tough".

Nick Stuart: Someone correct me if I get it wrong. I've heard that single women with children (the moms most likely to work outside the home) vote heavily Democratic. Married women with children (the most likely to be stay-at-home moms) vote heavily Republican.

Therefore, Rosen (unwittingly) falls on her sword inadvertently pandering to the base while insulting voters the Dems aren't going to get anyway. In the smoke-free back rooms, the Dem strategists are saying to themselves "hey, she's onto something."

Look for this message to be refined and wielded constantly during the campaign. · 1 hour ago

How does Obama campaign chief David Axelrod's statement fit into this Dem strategy?

"Also Disappointed in Hilary Rosen's comments about Ann Romney. They were inappropriate and offensive."

How does the campaign refine and wield a message that HQ has called "inappropriate and offensive"?

Terry

I have always had two reasons to vote for Mitt in November:

1. Defeating Obama

2. Making Ann Romney First Lady

I knew Ms. Rosen years ago when she was with the RIAA.  Unlike Mrs. Romney, she's a nasty piece of work.

Terrell David: $200 million for a contract now in baseball? Good God that sounds like way too much, especially for Fielder.

The only first baseman in MLB with a higher OPS in 2011 was Fielder's new teammate, Miguel Cabrera.  Since OPS is widely regarded as the best single statistical indicator of hitting value, and since Cabrera has now moved to 3b so Prince can play first, he's the best hitting 1b in MLB currently.  Throw in that he's not a liability in the field and that he almost never misses a game and, well, I don't see how "especially for Fielder" makes much sense.

The only downside, of course, is that to get him Detroit had to go to a 9 year deal.  But, when the owner is 82 years old and wants a World Series before he dies, 9 years isn't a problem.
