Dave, just to present another possible aspect to this discussion, Michael Yon (self-funded embedded reporter in Iraq and Afghanistan) doesn't believe this is legitimate: https://www.facebook.com/MichaelYonFanPage/posts/10151431673610665

The National League of POW/MIA Families is also disputing the accuracy of the film: https://www.facebook.com/notes/national-league-of-powmia-families/information-regarding-john-hartley-robertson-reporting-and-unclaimed/10151569836768850

Karen: The attitude of some commenters here and many conservatives, particularly men, reflect an attitude of ignorance, insensitivity, condescension when it comes to women's issues.

Can you give an example so I know how to avoid that? · 10 hours ago

I would like to know as well.

Unfortunately, the "community mobilization" will probably also include political lobbying, to pass laws to keep formula companies from advertising, offering samples or gift packs in hospitals, etc. -- the theory being that breastfeeding is only considered a good thing once all other alternatives have been banned.

I hate to see something so natural and beneficial for babies (the smaller of the handsome young fellows in my avatar photo was breastfed) become politicized, but here we are.

Lileks in screed mode = awesomesauce.  :)

Used car dealer - do I win an autographed copy of Chuck's book?  8^)

If our media were doing its job (pause for laughter), they'd have five-minute segments every night titled "This. Is. Insane.", featuring the very kinds of foolishness you outline above, Dave.

Hey Bruce, welcome to Ricochet!  I suspect that these heartfelt announcements, patterned on Obama's primetime, televised, dramatic revelation last year (?) on the subject, are just attempts to grab a bit of spotlight time in the week after SCOTUS considered the issue.  (I'm still chuckling about the mental image of the "Threesome Gang" ... :)

(and out of sense of decorum, I'll wait until your second or subsequent post to gripe about you not challenging Lindsey Graham in SC ... really wanted that to happen.)

Herbert Woodbery: I was thinking of creating a new thread, on a slightly tangential subject. For those of you who have had previous marriages.... What was the mistake you made in choosing the previous wife/husband. (Note I'm not interested in why it was bad after marriage, but what was the error that led to the previous marriage?) · 0 minutes ago

Wanting to be married so badly (or fearing that this is their "last chance") that one "settles" for a spouse, rather than taking the time to choose and truly get to know a prospective spouse prior to engagement.

My current wife and I agree on this one, BTW, as we each went through it with our exes.

Thank you, James, for addressing this issue -- and glad to see you posted it at Ricochet as well as at AEI (mostly because the comments over here will almost certainly be more instructive, and I look forward to the reactions of the Ricochetti).  Although I hear much sound and fury from the left about the problem of income inequality, I have yet to understand why it's a crisis that government has to solve.

Lots of good recommendations here already, so I'll just throw in my 2 cents.  Intern or co-op jobs, either before or during college, are invaluable in helping you figure out what you want to do after graduation.  (More importantly, they will help you decide what you will never again do professionally ... 8^)

Other suggestions I'd echo (sorry not to attribute them to the original authors):

  • Community college for the first 2 years -- but make sure the credits will transfer.  A concrete example - I've heard of a number of folks here in Central Ohio who attend Columbus State, then transfer to one of the Ohio State campi (if not the main campus in Columbus, then one of the satellites) for their last 2 years;
  • My Computer Science degree has served me well, as a programmer, database administrator, and now manager. Mechanical and electrical engineers (if you can hack the math requirements) are also rarely unemployed.

I just discovered Ancient Ancient Age (not a typo) 10-star, which I'm actually enjoying quite a bit more than I'd expected to for the (relatively cheap) price.

Severely Ltd.: [...]

Good commercial for Ricochet also. When he was talking about the fever swamp of Huff Po comments, my computer hiccuped and I thought they must've cut it there. I mean, what a coincidence. But it reloaded and I was happy to hear him complain about media bias a bit. [...] · 3 hours ago

Happened to me, as well, Severely.  I think the Ricochet member feed page refreshes every 30 minutes, and the video is 31:40, hence the problem.

I enjoyed the interview as well, especially the discussion of the writers' collective angst over the last episode of Cheers.  It begs the bigger question of "how do you go out on top"? -- in a lot of cases, I'd bet you just have to declare that it is finished, it is good, and go on.

She has credibility, Rob. After all, she's a freed slave (which would make her 148 years old assuming she was born in 1865): http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-TV/2013/02/13/Dem-Rep-Sheila-Jackson-Lee-Plays-The-Slave-Card

Amen, Juan, and there are source code escrow agreements already in place for some commercial products that would enforce that transition to open source.  (Of course, that assumes that the code is any good and/or maintainable to begin with ... 8^)

Skip, I just found this thread (ironically, looking for the prior thread that inspired our first Central Ohio meet-up at P.K. O'Ryan's), but I am definitely interested.  I'm currently in the process of selecting a CCW gun, so the opportunity to possibly handle and shoot a few different types of handguns would be very welcome.  Plus, my Remington 870 hasn't seen the outside of its case in far too long.

My weekends are pretty well booked (youth basketball) through 9-10 March, but any weekend thereafter would work.

My favorite line, extracted from a long-forgotten "new parent" book:

"The baby has no idea that you don't know what you're doing."

Runner-up: "You know what the right thing to do is?  Whatever works."
