Bio

Young man, veteran of the Iraq War who served with the 1st Cavalry Division from 2006-2010.  Started reading Conservative publications like National Review and the Weekly Standard during my high school years, though that most of it made sense compared to the alternative that is Modern Liberalism and haven't looked back since.

I have to say, after all the hot air they've expended over the past several months I am enjoying a little bit of schadenfreude on Gov. Walker's victory (and the progressive's defeat).

I hate to rain on the parade, but a post I read on Nation Review Online suggest that even though Walker is likely to survive the recall, the people of WI are still favoring Obama.  Although there are cases where Republicans can win statewide office in Democrat enclaves (Chris Christie is a good example) in my view this does not necessarily lead to  automatic changes in wider voting attitudes or patterns (see second link).  Still, every win helps and we should appreciate electoral success where we can find it.

From the NRO link:  "According to a poll released today by Marquette University, Wisconsin governor ScottWalker leads challenger Tom Barrett 52 percent to 45 percent among likely voters in next week’s much-anticipated recall election. ..."

"In the same poll, Wisconsin voters favored President Barack Obama over Mitt Romney by a 51 percent to 43 percent margin; surely this is bad news for Barrett, who can’t argue that the poll is somehow biased towards Republicans."

I wish some currently serving Senators would make this argument.

Unfortunately I think this decision is driven by politics, and the decision makers on this will stick to this path regardless of what we (as citizens, veterans, or  active duty Service Members) think about it.  Maybe that would change with a Romney administration, but since neither he nor the current president have any personal military experience I doubt it.

I strongly agree with your last point Diane, there are certainly many people who do not vote who do not need to be interjected into the process.  Case in point:   http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/post/what-people-dont-know-about-the-supreme-court--in-one-chart/2012/04/18/gIQA5w6gQT_blog.html

I'm with Charles Krauthammer on this one, preemptive limits/and or ban on drone surveillance of American citizens.  We could do a lot of things to make the nation more "secure", but it would go against the intrinsic personal liberty that makes America a beacon for freedom in the world.

Excellent find.  This is going on my Facebook wall.

If you missed it, the Weekly Standard hosted a related article on drug legalization by John P. Walters.  He was decidedly opposed to the idea.

I read the article and had a good laugh.  You mean to tell me they were being serious???

I missed the ridiculous name change so it took me a minute to figure the story out.  Other than that not too surprising considering his history.

Question on the Great California Exodus (the title of a recent WSJ online article seems apt):  Is it not possible that many of these migrants leaving the state for economic reasons are unreformed leftists, who will simply bring their support of  failed policies to other states that are less out of touch with fiscal reality? It reminds me of several news stories I've read on black Americans migrating to the south from northern states.  Of course I'd like to believe that all those persons were fiscal conservatives fleeing the insanity of an overweening urban political structure that strangles growth, but election results don't bear that out.  I guess I'm wondering if a state's economic policies have failed/are failing, but the citizens don't connect that failure with its root causes (Democratic party policies), can we make any progress as a conservative movement in the deep blue states?    Or am I going to be stuck listening to my contemporaries field inane 99%/1%-er  Occupy type arguments for the state of the economy?

DocJay beat me to it.  Only looking at the results the day after the election and realizing they've lost will make Obama and team reevaluate their positions.  Heck, maybe not even that will change their mind.

Despicable.  You would hope those students (and faculty potentially) would have learned about tolerance for differing opinions in the public forum, or at least how to reasonably express their dissent.  I think the display has definitely touched a nerve and invoked some introspection on the issue.  This is illustrative of the hardening of hearts on the other side but if the pro-life side continues to make the hard, intellectually honest argument about the inherent dignity of all human life we can make progress toward a culture where elective abortion is viewed less favorably by the American public and its policymakers.

I don't fault NRO or Rich Lowry for their handling of the situation, but I do agree with Mr. O'Sullivan's points above.  This incident unfortunately will be used (along with the Trayvon Martin incident in Florida) by race mongers to sow discord.  As an American with ancestors from several different ethnic and racial groups I just wish we could truly move beyond this once and for all to a race-neutral society.    Maybe we could be judged not "...by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character."
We are not there yet as a nation, not all of us, but someday I have faith we will be.

I am not upset about this at all.  Olbermann adds nothing to the debate other than vitriol and bile.  One of the worst parts of his act was the Worst Person in the World segment he did regularly, which for some reason never included himself.

Uncertainty over a complex scientific experiment result?  More testing is in order.  Meanwhile for the rest of us, the world continues to turn.
