Yes, he is right.  Sexual libertinism is now the opiate of the masses.

At dinner in DC with a bunch of  Dem legislative aides on the evening of President Clinton's first inauguration.  (I was new in town and didn't have many friends.)  Castro had just been "re-elected" president of Cuba.  I made joking reference to the ridiculousness of his 90% plus vote margin, never imagining that anyone could take issue with such an obvious observation.  But a guy across the table from me narrowed his eyes, looked at me with pure hatred, and called me a c*nt.  Seriously.  I got up and left; three other people called me the next day to apologize for his behavior.

Side note, my boss was the chairman of the California Club, and this same guy kept trying to join.  Gee, I wonder what happened to his numerous applications?

Joseph Eagar: Lower growth also hurts the poor and the unemployed, feeding the growth of the underclass.  I forgot to mention that. · 22 hours ago

Try to stay on track.

This might be the best post I ever read on Ricochet.

Salvatore Padula: I was once told by my friend's girlfriend that Kentucky Fried Chicken had to change its name to KFC because all the antibiotics they gave to the chickens had mutated them to such an extent that they could no longer be legally called chicken. I thought she was joking and laughed. This resulted in an hour-long lecture on the evils of GM food, meat, hydrocarbons, the Iraq War and country music. We were on a road trip and I was a captive audience. It was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life, and I've been arrested in Mexico. · May 15, 2013 at 4:27pm

Belated happy birthday, Red Feline!

Rob Long: Phew!

I've been swamped for the past 3 days and have just now waded through all 828 comments in this wonderful conversation.  And I say "wonderful" not because it was always sunny and nice, but because we're all still here, talking.

It's absolutely no surprise to anyone that I find myself in general alignment with GFL -- and whatever side you're on, let's all give him some respect and props for taking this all on (almost) singlehandedly -- but of course squish that I am, I also see the other side of it.  I'm in favor of SSM, but I have good friends (especially a certain Ricochet co-founder) who isn't.

I'm not sure how this will all turn out, but before I turn in (and hit the 200 word limit) I'd like to say, as a reader, thanks to all who slogged it out and that when we have our all-hands Ricochet meet-up soon, I owe you all a drink. · April 25, 2013 at 7:44am

Damn straight.  Stupid podcast - I'm 3 hours in and 400 posts to go.

Severely Ltd.: First it was National Review, the mag. I thought 'this is it'.

Then along came NRO and I thought 'even better.Thisis the place'.

And that led to Ricochet. I hardly checked NRO anymore.

And then the Member Feed. Main Feed, what's that?

But now my true spiritual home, the Hate thread. It's all I need. · 30 minutes ago

Word.  And I hate you for your cleverness.

I feel like such a fool for thinking this thing could have topped out at 1400 comments!   Soft bigotry of low expectations of haters.

TerMend

I love the title of this post.

Central Scrutinizer: Do I have to like both of @TerMend's posts or will liking just one show how much I hate him? I hate the ethics of hating. · 19 hours ago

I'm a girl.

(I wouldn't even bother to point this out, but the OCD in me needs the comments to total EXACTLY 1400, so we need just a few more.  I will permanently hate anyone who goes over.)

TerMend

Okay, I did and made a fool of myself by double-posting and can't figure out how to delete duplicate. Thanks a lot!  Now everyone hates me!

I hate you all because I cannot distinguish among you or figure out how you know so much about each other's world views and personal lives (even though I've been a member longer than most of you - btw who the heck is "Kenneth"?) and can't keep up with the inside jokes.  I only like Charlotte.  (And I'm a not a libertarian.)

Okay, one more. My nephew (about 8 at the time) was visiting some neighbors who had a houseguest from Jamaica. He lost a toy, and she wanted to help him find it. So she asked him, in a very strong Jamaican accent, where he had last seen it. He tried to figure out what she had said for a few moments, and then finally responded, "I'm sorry, I don't speak Spanish."

So in our family, when you don't understand the point someone is trying to make, the response is: "I'm sorry, I don't speak Spanish."

Charlotte: In our family the singular ofclothes isclo (coined by Older Sister about 38 years ago).

Makes sense, doesn't it? · 14 hours ago

Our family, too.  As in, "Hand me that Barbie clo."

One sister just learning to talk said "course of" (quite indignantly) when she meant "of course."   Course of, that's how we say it in our family to this day. · 4 hours ago

Another sister coined "dulett" for "adult."
