Antipodius :

Grew up in Ottawa, Ontario and Rochester then moved to UK then here. My brother migrated to America a couple of years ago. Got cousins in Denver, and Virginia.

I too am a Canadian now living in Aussie, with a brother in the States no less.  If you're ever up in Brisbane, feel free to drop in.  I can't promise to drink you under the table like DocJay, but we can enjoy a cuppa.

Fred Cole: The entire question rests on when life begins.

Is that a question?  Can it be reasonably denied that life begins at conception?  If yes, on what grounds?

Supporters for abortion need to do more than reasonably deny that life begins at conception: they must prove undeniably that it does not.  If there is even a possibility that human life begins at conception, then we must err on the side of caution and not arbitrarily end that life.

Say I'm out hunting, and I see through the brush glimpses of what seems to be an orange neon vest.  I cannot determine with certainty whether or not it's being worn by another hunter.  Would it be okay to use it for target practice, since I didn't have proof that I would be shooting at a human being?

(For a much clearer presentation of this matter, along with many other helpful arguments, see Robert Spitzer's book, "Ten Universal Principles: A Brief Philosophy of the Life Issues.")

Norpoth and Bednarczuk: “Obama has history on his side as well as the fact that he was unchallenged in the primaries.”

Perhaps my memory is faulty or the information I heard was incorrect, but were there not Democratic primaries (unreported by the MSM) where unknown challengers did surprisingly well against Obama?

Klazmania

Nah, Obama is more like Howell: always out playing golf.

Dave Carter  Prime Minister Netanyahu requests a meeting with the American President as Iran proceeds inexorably toward a nuclear weapon, and the American President can't be distracted from his campaign schedule to honor the request?

But he has enough time to appear on Letterman.

I guess the right to vote is not a liberal cause.

As if we needed more proof that the better man won in 2000.

When it comes to foreign policy, as in so many other issue areas, contemporary liberals in America and abroad have a striking tendency to define themselves and their values as the true measure of sophistication, regardless of actual intelligence, skill, practical failure or success.

Issue areas such as: economics, education, intercultural relations, and so on.

Thank you for your post.  As a foreigner who looks to the U.S. to provide international leadership, I hope that the wisdom you demonstrate here will be reflected in the choice made by the voters this November.

Drew Hankins: Watch it again and you can see the smirk occasionally cross his face.  You can tell he was having a blast.

As he left the stage, the smirk, the glint in his eye, and the slight performer's bow told me he knew exactly what he was doing.

lostingotham: Steyn gets it

The first time I watched it, I thought he was showing his age.  The second time through, I was much more impressed by how shrewd he was.  I agree that Steyn's analysis is right on the money.

Pat Sajak: I can't believe that Sidney Crosby managed to squeeze himself onto my hockey card.

Fairness requires the establishment of a government bureaucracy to correct this injustice.  Surely there can be bi-partisan support for a new law: ObamaCard.

You jest, but in truth The Loraxis a pretty fair summary of how many contemporary liberals view economics: entrepreneur starts an unsustainable business, it grows rapidly selling a useless product no one really needs, pollutes the environment, and exhausts the entire supply of the natural resource it depends on, forcing it to close.  · 2 hours ago

Absolutely brilliant, Joseph.  I nominate you for Post of the Biennium. · 12 hours ago

I second that!  I thought The Lorax was a horrendously made movie, but now I'm inclined to show it to our kids just for its educational value.

Liberal theory for everything is that you are not smart enough to live your life without central planners making you a utopia in exchange for your freedom. · 15 hours ago

That's one of the things we appreciated about Sowell's book, how he clearly shows that central planning will never be as efficient or productive as individual freedom.

Thanks everyone for the helpful (and sometimes humorous) suggestions.  I've forwarded them on to my son.

Sorry, I was having trouble posting the content of this post, so that nothing was showing up under the title.   Natalie, your comment (posted when I seemed to have nothing to say) reflects the conclusion my son has arrived at.  We're just trying to find out if he's right.  :)

We have found liberal rage to be quite helpful in convincing our children of some of the problems with the liberal mindset. They've experienced numerous online debates where their sincere questions reflecting a somewhat conservative perspective would be responded to with hatred and insults, and this has convinced them that liberals tend to respond with emotions rather than arguments.

It may be hot and dry up there, but our winter done here in Brisbane Australia has been feeling rather chilly and wet.  We've actually had to turn on the heater for the first time since moving here a few years ago.

But I suppose what's going on in other parts of the world can somehow be manipulated to fit in with their dogma.

Do you have to be in the U.S. to win the novel, or is he willing to send the prize to Australia?
