The reason we will lose on this issue is that it's being wrested out of the hands of the People and, once again, as is the wont of "progressives," is being decided by the Judicial branch. First Things controversial issue of "Judicial Usurpation" is proving true finally.
But 20 year olds now will never have the benefit of anything but the bubble media to tell the history of this "historic" civil rights campaign. The SCOTUS, with all nine fingers to the wind, will eventually, like the PPACA, cave to outside pressure and get on 'the right side of history.'
| dittoheadadt: Regarding another hot-button social issue, viruscop, up until just the last few months, SSM was something like oh-for-32 when put before states' voters. Now it's had a few modest wins (albeit in already-Liberal states). How is it again that the Right has lost on this social issue?· 1 hour ago |
Is it conspiracy-nuttism to suggest such a thing when the 'conspiracy' is implicit in the written CoC?
| Spin: No, that very one. Is that the conspiracy that is being suggested? Just a second, I've misplaced my foil hat.

Except stuff that seems (to the eds) conspiratorial, makes the 'em look like 'nutjobs' (I think that's the technical description, i.e. the editors' own usage), etc., etc...
This ain't no constitutional republic here. "You pays your money and you takes your choice." At least from the choices they give you.
Sorry, but a congressional resolution cannot have the force of law if it is unconstitutional. Killing American citizens on US soil without due process is just that. Remember, even BHO says, "I'm not a dictator."
....Use of Military Force, passed by joint resolution of Congress... I may be wrong but that would make it the law of the land. · 1 hour ago |
And where, from the United States Constitution, are you getting that, Klaatu? That snippet you cite's not in my copy.
This is not a power the President has conferred upon himself and the power is limited. The reality is that Presidents do have an enormous amount of power as commander in chief. That is a power the Constitution gives exclusively to the President. · 5 hours ago |
Speaking as a parent of an young adult daughter with Down Syndrome, who is much lower-functioning than the boys in both links (HT: shorteddy), my Kacey will never even be able to appreciate these boys' opportunities (in this life anyway), but I can really appreciate this. Thanks for sharing, John.
Side Note: Steve Hartman does Charle Kuralt's memory pretty good service, imho.
| shorteddy: You aren't patronizing the kid. He KNOWS he's not a basketball player on this level. But you are giving him a chance to fulfill a dream to nobody's detriment. Sports are for competition AND sportsmanship. As you rise into the professional levels sportsmanship becomes a civilizing check on the competition, but I believe on the high school level and in so many sports that will never be professional and sportsmanship remains the point throughout. Effort, dedication, team work, confidence etc.... This kid is a sportsman and his achievements in this area were simply recognized by letting him actually score. And then you have this · 1 hour ago |
I disagree re: Dana Carvey, EK. However, I do admit my ignorance on this topic; still it's more a function of just how horrendously boring SNL has been for decades than my cloistered life. We're not talking about a violation of the 2nd Commandment here, though.
Additionally, I completely agree with you re: your response to "be careful little eyes..." That IS (one reason among many) WHY non-believers make fun of Christians, particularly American Evangelicals.
Still, the moment you identify with a religion that affirms a Man rose from the dead, you're a nut, Evangelical or not. Unless you're a the moralistic/therapeutic deist sort of "Christian," (read: Mainline Prot/Liberal Catholic/Emergent/-ing), that's a pretty wide net.
1Cor 1:22-25 applies here.

No. They've been doing these short films for several years now, and they tend to be the highlight of the show. The Jesus video was just another one. Some others that come to mind: Enjoy! · February 22, 2013 at 11:26am |
| Majestyk: Liberals don't love Islam - they fear it. |
Majestyk took the words right out of my mouth.
Fear primarily, along with the bits already bandied about regarding Islam fulfilling a stereotype of what religion is from the modern, progressive mindset (i.e. fideistic, credulous, law-based/works oriented), a good dash of "the enemy of my enemy...," and you've got it pretty well covered.
But mostly, it's fear, plain and simple. It's a reasonable fear, actually. Imagine that. "Liberals" can still reason.
At least the baby has a beginning, happy or unhappy. Getting out of the womb is just the first hurdle this kid's gonna see, as life is full of hurdles. Who knows? S/he may end up a pretty good hurdler. Time will tell. Time would keep its secrets otherwise.
Not much in life is guaranteed to have a happy ending. But with two apparently committed parents this baby seems to much more going for it than many. That matters. · 46 minutes ago |
Definitely the funniest thing they've done since the Belushi/Ackroyd golden age.
I'm not sure what Jesus thinks of it. It's clear from the New Testament that Jesus has a sense of humor, though it tends to have a sharp edge.
Another mistake of theirs was, that this law was merely political and municipal, given for them, and intended as a directory for their courts, and no more;…
The exposition which Christ gave of this commandment...The commandment is exceeding broad, and not to be limited by the will of the flesh, or the will of men.
Christ tells them that rash anger is heart-murder (v. 22);Whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause, breaks the sixth commandment.
When it is without any just provocation given…
When it is without any good end aimed at, ... it is to do hurt;…
When it exceeds due bounds; ...when we seek the hurt of those we are displeased at. This is a breach of the sixth commandment, for he that is thus angry, would kill if he could and durst;...Cain's killing his brother began in anger...
He tells them, that given opprobrious language to our brother is tongue-murder, calling him,Raca, and,Thou fool.
He tells them, that how light soever they made of these sins, they would certainly be reckoned for; he that is angry with is brother shall be in danger of the judgment...
Christ Himself clearly teaches (Matthew 5:21-25) that every person is indeed capable of murder. Matthew Henry, just to cite one reliable source on the subject (re: vv.5:21-26):
"In these verses, he explains the law of the sixth commandment, according to the true intent and full extent of it.
I. Here is the command itself laid down (v. 12); We have heard it, and remember it; he speaks to them who know the law, who had Moses read to them in their synagogues every sabbath-day; you have heard that it was said by them, or rather as it is in the margin, to them of old time, to your forefathers the Jews, Thou shalt not kill. Note, The laws of God are not novel, upstart laws, but were delivered to them of old time;...
II. The exposition of this command...was,Whosoever shall kill, shall be in danger of the judgment. This was all they had to say upon it, that wilful murderers were liable to the sword of justice, and casual ones to the judgment of the city of refuge..."

While recently prepping for a survey reading class for my church's adult Christian education program, I came across this quote from the Puritan John Owen, in his "On the Mortification of Sin:"
"He that is appointed to kill an enemy, if he leave striking before the other ceases living, doth but half his work."
I remember thinking back to 1991 and the name Gen. Powell came to mind for some reason.
We already don't have adults who are able to maintain our republican (small r) freedoms. I'm not saying it's too late to do something about it, but it's gonna be a long road for those of us who love them.
