Riminds me of a line from a Humphry Bogart movie - "the cheaper the hood, the gaudier the language."

New York, New York, it's a heck of a town!

Not my first, but my best.

I played Rugby on a city club in Detroit until I quit at the age of 45.  The last few years we were an old boys club with age restrictions.  I am sure that some of my old team mates are still playing twenty years later.

My blunder.  Rugby Union was an event from 1900 to 1928.  The U. S. won gold in 1920 and 1924.

Rugby Union was once an olympic event.  In fact, I believe that the United States won the first gold medal.  How about a revival?

The Just So Stories by Rudyard Kiping.

When my children were young they especially enjoyed The Twits by Roald Dahl.

When I was young, it was impossible to imagine not having read, or having read to one, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.  It was also impossible to escape some exposure to Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, none of which seemed to do me or my contemporarties any harm.

I was pleased to see the Wind in the Willows included.  I would suggest Bertie's Escapade, also by Kenneth Graham, along with Watership Down and The Tyger Voyage by Richard Adams.  And how about the Beatrix Potter books for younger children?  They feature, on a more elementary level, those same qualities cited by Chris Hurtubise in connection with the Wind in the Willows.

To tabula rasa - I resisted having the Wind in the Willows read to me as a child, but picked it up and read it myself at the age of fourteen.  I am now sixty five and have re-read it at least once a year ever since.  In fact, my daughter and son-in-law gave me a beautiful annotated edition for Father's Day - preparation for my new role as grandfather - which I am half way through and enjoying immensely.

Is anyone else having trouble listening to the entire podcast?  My computer freezes up and shuts itself off at the same point each time I try to play it.  Maddening.  Please forward technical advice to morley.stevenson@gmail.com.

So, he needs to pull his goalie, but he doesn't know it.  For God's sake, don't tell him!

I believe it was Ogden Nash who observed that "a door is something that a dog is perpetually on the wrong side of".  Mr. Nash obviously did not know cats.
