Bio

I am a real-time embedded software engineer currently living amidst the cornfields of Central Illinois, not far from where I grew up, to use a very liberal definition of "grown up."  Most of my work has been for military applications.  I never served in the military, but I've spent a lot of time listening to those who have.

My hobbies include reading (especially history),  music, and collecting previous addresses.  I've lived in Ohio, Georgia, California, and Connecticut.

If you came back here because something I wrote was out of line and offended you, please know that you're probably taking it far more seriously than I did.

Unless I specifically called you a "doody-head,"  in which case, it's on!

EJHill: Bottom line: The president of CBS News and Obama's Director of Communications are brothers. End of story. · 32 minutes ago

Maybe.  And maybe the words "to give the news impartially, without fear or favor, regardless of party, sect, or interests involved" still burn in a breast or two.

I guess we're going to find out if those words, or trite phrases like  'journalistic integrity," still mean anything at all to the profession.

Ms. Attkisson did make it sound like she knows who is responsible, but one can know a thing without being able to prove it.

As far as typical Chicago thug tactics working their magic, we may be seeing that those tactics have an inherent limitation or two.  Perhaps the media are waking up to the fact that if one behaves like one is state-controlled, sooner or later one will be state-controlled, and with that will come being treated as being state-controlled.  If they are under the impression that being treated as state-controlled means they will not be monitored, they should go track down a few former employees of TASS (if they can find any that weren't KGB to begin with, that is).

dash: Oh dear, Joan is up already. It was a short night an it looks like it's gonna be a loooong day. · 5 minutes ago

Now, Dash... is that any way to be?  Into the miasma of you and 10¢ bonking each other over the head, Scrut and Ltd. being, well, Scrut and Ltd., SiS sniping at the wounded just like the little sister I wish I didn't already have,  and Larry working his way through the early chapters of Word Power Made Easy, Joan is a bright little beam of pure malevolence.

OMG! A whole Percival Paragraph, that is as rare as Friday the 13th. French men I dealt with in the past in business mostly suck. Oh, they are so abstract. Gag.  · 7 hours ago

I'm here.  I can't always think of something suitably hateful to say, but this thread busts me up.

Outhouses?  Why, we could only dream of...

...sorry.  Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch flashback.

The village near where my dad grew up has waxed and waned over the years.  The population always seems to head back to 200-250.  My uncle claimed that that was because every time someone was born in town, somebody else had to leave.

The town has continued to muddle along.  Lately, more people have been moving to the area to get away from the nearest city.  It will be a while before it becomes a proper suburb, but I suppose it will happen one day.

And about the outhouses... the indoor plumbing of my grandmother's farmhouse is about as old as I am.

Jeff:

Since cops can always get you on something, it's never safe to talk to cops. Talking to cops can never help you.

  • You can't talk your way out of being arrested.
  • Anything you say that is exculpatory is inadmissible as hearsay.
  • Anything that you say that can convict you is admissible under the contrary to interest rule!

Thanks for that last shot, George.  It reminds me that one of my fondest wishes is to one day stroll down Friedrichstraße through Checkpoint Charlie, eating a Sausage McMuffin.

Damage control.

In light of this, the President needs to look presidential, and fast.  So, round up some low-information Europeans, stand in front of a colonnade, and make with the Southern Baptist preacher schtick.

A potential problem is that low-information Europeans might not be as thick on the ground as they were in 2008.  One of my German friends seems to be coming to the conclusion that Obama might not be the sharpest pickelhaube in the armory.

I guess that's phase II.

EDIT: This cut-and-paste stuff can be confoosing.

Maybe Dash is an engineer.  Somebody in France ought to be – can't leave something like that to the French.

I worked for a while on a project of an international nature with a team from Great Britain and another from France.  We would all get together to hammer out what the doohickey was supposed to do, then memorialize the agreement and move on.  Or, at least that was the plan.  In practice, the French team would agree to some point or other, then the next day would have changed their minds and be headed off in a direction completely orthogonal to what we had already agreed to.

During one of the breaks, one of the Brits muttered to me "now you know what we've been putting up with for the last 900 years."

To hit Walla Walla and then the Columbia River Gorge, get off interstate 90 at Missoula, MT, take Hiway 12 West and drive the Lolo Pass. It's a beautiful winding romp over the mountain.
