Bio

As a student in the early 70's I studied American history in preference to the history of my own country. I realised later the reason I found Australian history dull was that the professors were Marxists but I have remained a keen student of American history.

I think I read somewhere the verminous and turdlike LaPierre has been causing members to leave the NRA in droves, though I suspect it has a long way to fall before it has less members than Salon.com has followers.

The temptation to pay out Tarentino and Oliver Stone (surely the Ralph Nelson of his generation) and Mr O'Hehir (whoever he is) in the same kind of language is hard to resist.

Unfortunately, we are in the position of having to persuade people to think rationally and act in their own interests, while they only have to stir up unreasoning fear and hatred.  They are talking to an audience they have been corrupting for years.  We need to get people sober, while they are handing out "free" drinks.

La Dernière Lettre: What can't we ban extended magazines?  Who on earth needs them other than soldiers? · 57 minutes ago

If you're swimming with sharks, don't have a nose bleed.

Who's to decide what the words "extended" and "needs" mean?

Mendel: I have no problem with the project.

For better or worse, the Oval Office has ingrained itself in the global psyche as the symbol of American power and dominance.  For many foreigners, it is what they see on TV when their dear leader visits the U.S.  I tend to despise pomp and circumstance, but in this case the psychological effect of keeping the visual continuity might be worth it. · 1 hour ago

Couldn't they have leased Aaron Sorkin's replica?

All the news that fits the agenda.

Nice find, Atipodius.

I think the probability of the assault media taking up biloxi1's argument is zero.  Allegedly conservative Republicans are only slightly more likely to take it up because they tie themselves in knots trying to appear "fair and "reasonable".

The left have no such scruples. Remember the stampede to characterize Jared Loughner as a creature of the right on the grounds that he was an admirer of Hitler? And the attempt to make Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh responsible for his actions? Remember their glee at finding a Tea Partier named James Holmes? Their failure to check their facts before going public and the grudging back down when the truth came out?

It all makes sense, given the kinds of deployments this administration likes to make and the rules of engagement they set.  Women make ideal hostages.

Jimmy Carter: A GPS on the handle of the cart in the grocery store in order to locate products immediately. Type in name brand and what it is, the GPS returns with the aisle and location on the shelf. No name brand? Then a general description returns suggestions until You find the product and select it. · 53 minutes ago

There would be no market for it.  Why do you think the stores move things around frequently?  They want people to spend more time in the store searching and buying additional stuff on impulse.

Raw Prawn

It is possible.  Look how thoroughly the loony left has taken over the Democratic Party.  The term "blue dog" is now only ever heard in the context of maudlin nostalgia binges.

Of course, career politicians will probably be harder to pry loose than patriots, but they are good at telling what direction the wind is blowing from.

Mothership_Greg: I propose that we stop calling Leftists by any labels that they aren't fond of, as long as they stop throwing around hate speech like "anti-choice" and "black puppet"....err, wait, never mind. · 27 minutes ago

Conservative rhetoric resembles Democrat defense policy.  Damn, if our enemies won't agree to disarmament, we'll just do it unilaterally.

wmartin: It was a bad idea to ever put her on Fox. Her commentary was stunningly vapid and empty; she had absolutely nothing remotely interesting to say. She's the female Sean Hannity. · 39 minutes ago

They can't all be giants like Oprah and Couric.  And some people like Hannity.

I think you're laboring the point a bit but Obama's presidency does represent the rich kicking away the ladder behind then so that no one else can ascend.  High earners are being punished and the proceeds are being used to welfare trap the poor like medieval serfs unable to leave their lord's estate.

Woodrow Wilson: President March 1913 to March 1921

Benito Mussolini: Prime Minister October 1922, Dictator January 1925 to July 1943.

Margaret Sanger: First birth control clinic 1916. Founded American Birth Control League (Later called Planned Parenthood) 1921. Founded National Committee on Federal Legislation for Birth Control 1922.

Adolph Hitler: Became leader of the NSDAP (Nazis) 1921. Published Mein Kampf 1925. Chancellor 1933. Dictator 1934 to 1945.

Can anyone else see the problem?

American Progressives/Liberals did not learn anything from the European fascists.  The tutelage ran in the other direction.  Mussolini,  was loved by the Progressives because he flattered them.

I thought Jonah Goldberg made that point.

Someone pointed out that Mussolini is unknown to many Americans, so dragging him into the argument is pretty pointless.  Conservatives should practice using "Progressive" as a four letter word (again).

Inspiration moves individuals.  Fear moves mobs.

A majority will never read Jennifer Fulwiler's article.  It's too long.

Not only can numbers be manipulated, they usually are.  Anecdotes can be made from whole cloth, and Oprah can slip a few in between the celebrity interviews.

What did you think about the suggestion that governments should pay women to have abortions?  It would certainly throw out some interesting numbers the public would be unable to ignore.

Raw Prawn:

Okay, it's time to put this myth to bed.

The Beatles werenot "John Lennon." The Beatles were both LennonandMcCartney -- a once-in-a-lifetime blending of songwriting talent that produced some of the most extraordinary music ever made.

In fact, if you want to be even more precise, the Beatles were McCartney and George Martin -- it was these two who blended the creative genius and the work ethic necessary to propel the Beatles to such success.

I'll even concede that Lennon was the "soul" of the Beatles (whatever that means). But a soul -- in the absence of a head and a heart and (even more importantly) a work ethic, will not get a lot of work done.  · 6 hours ago

Can I take it then that you really like the Beatles?

I never said Paul would not have sold a lot of detergent and candy bars had he been left to his own devices.

Raw Prawn:

Seriously: Last week Rush Limbaugh alerted his listeners that the left, no doubt encouraged by progress on the gay marriage front, has now ventured the first tentative steps toward normalizing pederasty, in an article in the UK Guardian.  Once they get that done the liberal agenda will be practically complete.

Correction: the liberal agenda is never, evercomplete. We should never, ever forget this. · 8 hours ago

I know they will never be content.  On the other hand, they haven't really had a new idea in a century.  Though their tactical range and flexibility is amazing, their goals have not changed an iota.

Bearing in mind Irving Cristol's observation that rot and depravity are no longer by-products of the liberal agenda, they are the agenda.  Once they have forced us to accept and even celebrate pederasty as a normal expression of human sexuality (all love is good, isn't it?), it's hard to imagine where else they can go.

R. Craigen: Since women have a higher tolerance for pain, perhaps they should be sent into engagements in which participants are most likely to be captured and tortured for classified information. · 18 minutes ago

As any boy with ugly blisters could tell you, they really are insensitive brutes. And furthermore, they don't fight fair.
