G-d fearing libertarian.  The only choices that matter in the eyes of G-d and man are those that are freely made.

iWc: Why does it have to be sexual?

Also, nudity is not just a materialistic issue (soul/body) but a sin/shame issue. · 8 hours ago

It is not sinful to be naked.

The only reason nakedness leads to embarassment is that a woman's naked body  is not usually how she sees her soul.

iWc

Clinton did not look odd. But he was clearly a sociopath.

iWc

Why does it have to be sexual?

I had a thread on this: http://ricochet.com/member-feed/Why-do-Women-dress-their-daughters-like-Whores

In which I wrote:

if a boy finds a girl attractive, she, especially if not yet scarred by experience, instinctively thinks the boy actually likes  her . After all, women see themselves much more as a unity than do men: a woman’s dress and appearance is her conscious projection of how she sees herself, while a man has little difficulty separating his appearance from his actions.

...

But the modern world has gone a step further. Because our society values appearance above all else, women have learned that their bodies are far more important than their souls. And when they think of themselves that way, the reality follows.

...

So when the “rest” of us encourage our daughters to dress modestly, we do it because we want our daughters to project an image of themselves that includes elegance, an image that puts her soul on equal footing with her body. If she dresses that way, then it will help her to think of herself that way,

The thing I love about this song is that he puts on blackface to "blend in." The joke is that the song, words and music, is from the yiddish theater. So the Jazz Singer features a Jew impersonating a black man by singing Jewish music.

I have one friend in particular who is astonishingly well plugged-in, spiritually speaking. He gets vibes from places and events and people that are absolutely freaky-accurate.

He is endowed with spiritual sight.

iWc

I have no claim to clairavoyance, but my life is chock-full of serendipitous events.

I once booked a ticket for someone, and to save something like $75, he was booked on an extra leg and a horrible layover. He was real mad at me - until the flight he had wanted crashed on take off.

I had no idea or premonition. Things just worked out that way. And it has, for me, countless times. On my own, I am nothing special. But when G-d acts through me.... watch out!

Thanks for the shout-out!

Tesla is artificially sustained by subsidies. There is no long term path to a  moneymaking electric car company.

iWc

I never have enjoyed the voices of women who think whining is singing.

iWc

That said, if anyone has the time to watch it, and can summarize each position in 200 words (brevity being at the heart of any sound argument), I would be delighted to read the notes and discover whether my kneejerk reaction is actually true.

iWc

I'm with Matthew. Speaking as a businessman, an inventor of some note, and someone who is a heavy user of the patent system, I have yet to meet an academic who has a clue.

It is astonishing how even libertarians become "command and control" theorists when it comes to the consequences of laws.

iWc

I reject the premise.

Man is not good or evil, at core. We are what we choose to be, what our choices make us.

And G-d made us capable of both, in extreme measures, so that our free will has meaning and potency.

I highly recommend today's Pepper and Salt WSJ for a religious perspective.

I cannot convince you. We have different versions of history. We have different economic presuppositions. We do not share a common language.

Joseph Eagar: Isn't this a post about convincing people to take your side, though, iWc? · 2 hours ago

Actually, no. The question posed is how we get people to act on what they already know, at some level, is true.

I am worried about the people who look back afterward, and say: "Gee, we kind of knew that was going to happen, and I wonder why we didn't act accordingly?"

Since you don't "know" the same future that many others here do, the post was not directed at you at all.

iWc

There is so much that separates us (in terms of underlying assumptions) that a constructive conversation is impossible.

As I wrote, time will tell.

I think my predictions are as close to a no-brainer as predicting the future gets.

But what exactly are you predicting?  You hedged your bets by saying "Nothing stands in the way of all of these things happening in the next year or five."

...

So are you claiming "hyperinflation, a growing secession movement, riots" will all happen within 3 years, and that's what you call a "no-brainer?" · 1 hour ago

Hyperinflation: YES. Printing money like crazy has consequences - it always has, and it always will.

Growing Secession Movement: Already happening. Look at all the states passing laws forbidding following the federal laws on guns, health care, etc.

Riots: Twinned with hyperinflation. When those who are so hooked on the dole find they cannot buy what they want, they will certainly riot.

I continue to believe that the Obama administration should follow the same policy it followed (brifely) in Libya: bomb whichever side is winning.

Or at least ship arms to whichever side is losing.

When all the people who do not respect the sanctity of human life have achieved their ends, then maybe those Syrians interested in freedom can rebuild the pieces.

iWc

Joseph Eagar:

Anyway, you'll have to do better than this if you want to convince anyone.

There are good and smart people on both sides of this debate. I think my predictions are as close to a no-brainer as predicting the future gets. But the great thing about predicting the future is that we'll be able to look back in 2 or 3 years, and it will be clear who was right.
