I remember this campaign to get paid for housework in the '70s.  It was a stupid idea then, and it hasn't improved with age.

"Global warming" is the commonly used phrase for AGW, or Climate Change, or whatever the phrase of the week is.    The idea that human activity is increasing the concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere which will lead to unacceptable and unnatural increase in temperatures that throw off the balance of the biosphere and kill us all.

It is a mistake to conflate "global warming" with AGW.  But the alarmists do it on purpose.  They think if they show that ice caps are receding, they have proved that they are right and we need to do something about it.

To believe AGW is a problem, you have to buy all 4 of the following:

1.  The earth is warming (basically, it is).

2.  This is bad and will have unprecedented, catastrophic consequences.

3.  Human activity (CO2 production) substantially caused it.

4.  Changes in human activity can significantly reduce or eliminate it.

Alarmists like to concentrate on #1 because there is evidence for it.  #2, 3, and 4 are impossible to prove directly.

Global warming (not AGW) is essentially warming of the earth's atmosphere (which in turn warms the oceans and the land surface).

Too many people are trying to read politics into this quiz.  The question did NOT ask about "global warming", the question was "What gas do most scientists believe causes temperatures in the atmosphere to rise?".

What is the difference between "global warming" (my post did not mention "anthropogenic") and "atmospheric warming?"

Richard Fulmer

Eric Hines: Perfect score, although I had guess at the answer to #12 concerning the gas that "causes atmospheric warming."  The correct answer was not present.

Water vapor is the most important greenhouse gas (GHG).  Other gases, like methane, are more potent GHGs than CO2 but make up a much tinier proportion of the atmosphere and are therefore a smaller factor. · 9 hours ago

Exactly.  13/13 for me, an extremely easy test.  #12 asked what gas "most scientists" believe causes global warming.  I don't know whether a majority of scientists believe that, but it was pretty obvious that was the answer they were looking for.

Aww, how cute.  Playing to find out who gets to be obliterated by the Blackhawks in the finals.

Hartmann von Aue: With all the mention of Dylan  and Beatles remakes, I am surprised no one mentioned U2's remakes of "All Along the Watchtower" and "Helter Skelter". Thoughts? · 27 minutes ago

U2's version of Helter Skelter was energetic and certainly listenable but rough.  Points off for not even getting the lyrics right.  Edge to the Beatles.

Lots of people have done "Watchtower" but I haven't heard a version I like better than Hendrix's. · 21 hours ago

I would agree with both assessments. Hendrix set the bar awfully high. Speaking of Hendrix, though, how about his cover of "Day Tripper" from the Radio One sessions? · 1 hour ago

Man, does that rock.  Cheap Trick also covered it well.

Hendrix also blasted through Johnny B. Goode live on Hendrix In The West.  Never liked that song much until I heard that.

I have no idea what you look like, but be sure to keep your weight under control.  Big belly + blonde + beard = not a good combination if you know what I mean.

$845 billion is a little less catastrophic, but still greater than any deficit from the years before Obama took office.  Hardly what I'd call a victory; we have so much further to go and almost nobody in Congress with the backbone to try.

Palaeologus: As was recently mentioned on another thread All Along the Watchtower fits the bill.

Hendrix > Dylan = self-evident. · 1 hour ago

Right.  There have been several other versions including one by Dave Mason that I absolutely hate.  He must have thought it clever to sing the song almost entirely on one note.

Dang, that's a good one.

He'd have to be Minister of Magic. Duh. ;-) · 2 hours ago

Teller never says a word.  That's why I wanted him for press secretary.

Luozi: Maybe it’s just me, but all this is starting to look like idol worship.  It strikes me as (unintentionally) obsequious.

Maybe it is just you.  I don't think very many people outside of conservative circles and the world of economics have ever heard of him.  Most of the people I talk to are unfamiliar with him.  I don't see him on TV much (other than Uncommon Knowledge, which I have never seen on regular TV).  A little more exposure wouldn't hurt.

What an interesting choice.  Which suggests another question:  Could a professed atheist ever be elected President?  I really don't think so, at least for the forseeable future. · 1 hour ago

As to your atheist question, that's a toss-up.  Does anybody seriously believe that Barack Obama has religious values, and that they restrict him in any way?  · 30 minutes ago

He pretends to, and that's usually enough to keep up appearances.
