You're right that the Church has a long tradition of being involved in politics, ...

I'm including Jesus as head of the Church.   ...

Christianity was a sect, or even a cult, of Judaism until the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (306-337) made it the dominant religion of the Roman Empire.

The organization of the Church of Rome is based on the hierarchical system of the Roman Army. As in the army, it is ruled from the top down, and everyone is expected to be obedient without question.  · 4 hours ago

Red, that is an absolutely preposterous and egregiously false statement. · 4 hours ago

You know, my Christology right now is more or less trending Arian. If anyone should have a reason to rip Catholicism, it should be me. And yet I tell you that despite my differences with Catholicism on doctrine, it's been a huge force of good in the world. Even if you're an atheist, you have to recognize what a civilizing force it's been. Which is why I don't get some of the Daily Kos-caliber Catholic bashing we see here frequently.

Douglas: God isn't a Socialist. God is a Utopian. But he's unique in that He's the only one that canactually make Utopia happen. We just screw it up down here.

Save me from Utopians! They need to face reality, not get caught up in a dream world that would be a nightmare if it came true. Marxism is a perfect example of that.

Uh, I say God was a Utopian, not Christians. Christians believe in a flawed world, and a Utopian next-world.   When Christians HAVE tried Utopia, it's ended badly. See: early Puritan settlements in North America.

We're going to just have to agree to disagree on human nature.

The noted conservative theoretician David Axelrod basically said yesterday that big government is complex, and mistakes are bound to be made.  Beat them over the head with that.

I see I'm not the only one that thought Axelrod handed conservatism a massive baseball bat to beat liberalism with, Capone-style. In one fell swoop, he just confirmed all of the conservative movements' arguments against big government and massive bureaucracy. I don't think Ronald Reagan could have made the argument for us any more effectively. This was akin to Brezhnev saying on TV "You can't blame me for the food shortages. Communism just isn't very good at making surpluses . And ironically, Axe handed us this weapon in the defense of his boss ... he that seeks to grow government like Red Tide on a polluted beach. We should run that Axelrod clip in every single GOP election for the next two cycles. "Even the liberals admit that government has grown out of control".

Black Prince

James Delingpole:

The thing I love about you Americans is that you take your checks and balances very seriously. And your guns.

Given what's happened over the past 6 years, I see no evidence that Americans are serious about anything...much less checks and balances or guns.  I'd love to be proven wrong, but I'll believe it only when I see it.  I'm not holding my breath. · 1 hour ago

I think more than ever, this is evidence of two Americas, one right, that values the Founding ideals... real Americans, in other words... and one left, a sector both revolutionary and vapid, that wants to bring down the tyrannical white patriarchy and effect real change so long as they can have the latest iPhone and won't have to miss The Walking Dead.

The situation is one of numbers, and what makes Black Prince right on this is that they are outnumbering us. And if amnesty passes... whoa boy. Prepare for the flood. The current IRS scandals will be mild compared to the mad abuses of power that will come with 30 million more Democrats weighing the scales.

I've come to the point where I don't believe in Godwin's Law either. I just don't think we should throw out Nazi analogies lightly. But if the argument can effectively use a reference to Der Fuhrer, then so be it, Godwin be damned.

Simon Templar: How about to stop a guy frome beating the [expletive] out of  a girl?

The lady in Scotland was taking a serious beating but hated me for stopping it.  Maybe the guy was right and I should have minded my own [expletive] business. · 38 minutes ago

No, you did the right thing even if she didn't appreciate it. Any further beatings was now her own fault. Yes, I know about the psychology involved here, but she was an adult, and at some point, adults take responsibility. If she runs right back to the fists of the guy abusing her, at that point, it's all on her.

As for Williamson, in a sane world, he would have gotten a round of applause from the audience, the cast would have bowed to him, and the idiot woman would have been ejected. But he doesn't live in a sane world. He lives in New York.

That's old hat. A couple of weeks ago I was looking at the schedule for the graduation ceremonies at the University of Michigan and I learned that a special ceremony exclusively for African American graduates was one of the events on the list. I imagine such things are at many public universities. · 2 hours ago

Did they graduate from LSU, or from GayLSU? Is there going to be a Catholic  graduation? A Muslim graduation? An atheist graduation?

As much as I admire the traditions of an American college education, perhaps such an education is obsolete and a waste.  It's's stuff like this that will keep me from shedding a single tear as higher education moves away from the "Go live there for four years" model to more a practical learn as time allows, learn as you go model where people work while getting education and training online or at night or on weekends.

In that case, I find your aversion to the typical undergraduate experience much more understandable. Also, looking back over the thread I think I have been a bit more sarcastic toward you than I should have been. I apologize.   · 2 minutes ag

As the Aussies say, no worries Sal. I realize that I sounded like I was creeping into Dean Wormer territory there and believe it or not, I really hate doing that, but one thing I firmly believe in is that our fiscal and political ills are directly linked to our social ills, i.e. that an irresponsible and libertine people leads to big and tyrannical government. Even Ben Franklin... who was quite naughty in his own life at times... realized that virtue was important in a free people and had to be taught and encouraged. Washington and John Adams sang a lot from that same songbook. I don't want to be the "No fun of any kind!" guy, but I also recognize that "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life" is a pretty good thing to teach.

Unless you think Animal House is a great model for college, then it's not only appropriate but necessary that a college puts limits on what it will endorse and allow on its campus.

Were you a member of Omega House by any chance? · 1 hour ago

I wasn't in a frat. I was married and worked my way through school. What the GI Bill didn't pay for, working a full time job nights did.

Salvatore Padula: Students getting drunk and behaving badly is as old as the university system itself. As conservatives, we should stand on the side of tradition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Scholastica_riot · 19 minutes ago

So, a couple of snotty drunken students start a riot that kills nearly 100 people... and this is "conservative"? Even as a joke, that was bad.

They're "well informed" in the same way that they have better taste than you because they drive a Volvo and watch public television. "Reading the New York Times" should be on the Stuff White People Like list.
