George Savage:  ... boldly embracing and micro-managing the conventional wisdom ...

That was a perfect description.  Thank you.

Not until they add the "Awesomeness" category.

Can't help but notice how outraged are against men's porn, but how there is not a word against women's porn.

Do you need a conclusive list of behaviors that are destructive in order to talk about one?  Many people think porn is no big deal; a growing body of evidence suggests that it is very destructive.  Saying "yeah, but other stuff is bad too, why don't we talk about that?" doesn't change the evidence.

I like this podcast.  I like it a lot.

If high school matters, then no one will be electable in 2040

I'm sure they are having the same conversation in Singapore...

I don't understand why anyone would want to make our education system worse than it already is.

Troy Senik, Ed.: Dave, I couldn't agree more. Further investigation may or may not show there to be no cause for concern, but protesting the very act of asking the question as bigoted is indefensible.

Agreed.  It isn't as if representatives of enemy interests haven't infiltrated the State Department before.

We have a local purveyor of fine ice cream that makes a blueberry-basil sorbet (so good).  I would not hesitate to buy a pint of your lemon-basil confection (or the chocolate-chipotle, for that matter).  I think a maple syrup and bacon ice cream would hit the spot.

Wow, I'm surprised by all of the Dylan hate here.  If you are going to give the Medal of Freedom to songwriters, you give it to Bob Dylan.  I'm with Maura on this: Dylan is the greatest living American songwriter, and I only add the American qualifier because Paul McCartney is still alive.

Mendel and Valiuth: Did you see this study?  I am not an expert in genomics, and I (ahem) only read the abstract because my institution doesn't have access to the full text, but it looks interesting.  It is a genome wide association study in which they conclude that genetics accounts for ~50% of some forms of intelligence (not sure of their measures from the abstract).  What are your thoughts on the validity of their findings?

Fantastic album.

Wow, I hadn't heard about this.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.: It's also worth noting the different treatment that pro-lifers receive compared to, say, the Occupy Wall Street crowd.

When those enforcing the law choose to selectively punish based on the perpetrators larger ideology, we have ceased to be governed by a set of laws.  When they single out those who haven't even committed a crime - which appears to be the case here - I don't even know where that leaves us.  It seems like a pretty good working definition of tyranny.

By this logic, is it immoral for conservatives to work at universities, since they are overwhelmingly liberal and receive public funds?  I think that's called giving up.

As an aside, I love that Rob rarely touches politics with Martini Shot, just like I love James Lilek's largely apolitical blog.  As conservatives, we get to believe that not everything is about politics.

LC/RC gets better every time. Kaus and Rubin are great together. I also love the young guns, for what it's worth.

I work with Europeans.  They say the same thing, until they realize how far you have to drive to get anywhere around here in Maine.  Add in the cost of heating (some 70% of homes in Maine use heating oil) and even the most enlightened among us are none too pleased about rising gas prices.
