Just cant see him winning Virginia, super red state no matter what Saboto at UVA etc. wishful thinking is. I was even tricked into voting for "fiscally conservative democrats" Warner, Webb, Kaine (I'm so sorry), that wont happen again.
Full disclosure: I have been a PSU/JoePA hater since childhood, I am a Pitt fan and alumnus, the link below explains the localized dynamic to those unfamilar and interested. Yes, I said hate, why? because PSU has always been what we in Western PA would call total BS, on this board we might call it brand deception. The original incident could have happened anywhere, but the cover-up could probably only been carried out at PSU http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2011-11-08/features/bs-gl-reimer-penn-state-20111108_1_joe-paterno-penn-state-joepa
I think this thread is way over over-intellectualized and lawyerly (imagine on Ricochet of all places!), these "rumors" have been around a long time in the rival community. I'm really annoyed by these lawyerly plausable deniability arguments, regarding JoePA. Why would the heir apparent to JoePA , "architect of linebacker U" suddenly "retire", only to interview at places like Maryland (inferior to non football types) and not get the job. Same for Tom Bradley. nobody wants them. To put it in Ricochet terms, would it strike you as serious odd if no one from the Reagan cabinet was employable in their field?
Depends what you think "college" is, don't mean to sound like an old geezer but there is not much "grown up" about the current generation, maybe it will be different by then, as a gross generalization they have the gumption of a turnip. Your probably not doing them much of a favor paying for college, except the best years of their life part, if they get that.
Do as I say, not as I do. I'm paying for mine right now and they don't have "skin in the game", if I had it to do over I would do it differently.
As I've said before I am in the belly of the beast, I also piped up about Newt and 6-sigma, this is the primary service I hope to provide. Having worked in industry and government... please the government is not a business! I don't understand what seems to be naivite? Someone with strong leadership and management skills from business can be effective in government, as long as they understand they are not running a pizzaria (this makes me LOL because its the example I often use).
In my role, I am expected to improve what I'll describe as bureacratic system performance, to REALLY do this would obviously take fundamental/systemic changes. Its a frustration of mine when the people who are in a position to try to make those changes, throw out platitudes or . For those of you interested in improving the bureacracies, I would encourage you to google on the recent departure of the Federal CIO.
I feel like an old geezer, but the shame back in the day would have been even greater than being politically incorrect today. That is gone right? Also, we lived in squalor, which the current generations will not do. Cracks me up when people talk about how "grown up" the recent generations are, based on promisuity or something, very unusual to see independence among the youth.
Samwise Gamgee: Mark Steyn has a great line on the boomers, something to the effect of, "they were born in peace, they were born in a time of limited government... the richest generation in human history... and now they're whining because they don't get to see Robert Goulet in dinner theater."
So exits the crappiest generation this nation has seen... · Sep 8 at 9:00am
Sisyphus: Virginia and either New Hampshire or Iowa. The trend in Virginia is for the Northern Virginian immigrants to support the great federal bloat and trend the state blue. The local sorting process is socialists move north to DC or Maryland where those scary guns are limited to criminals and patriots move south where they can blow up their own fireworks and carry concealed.
Federal reform and diminishment will leave Virginia firmly red as the carpet baggers leave for greener pastures for the first time since FDR. · Sep 6 at 4:44pm
I think this is some sort of conventional wisdom (Sabato is a va lib and may have something to do with it). I don't agree with it though, someone I know really well believed that Warner, Web and Kaine were fiscal conservatives. In va the way to win election as a lib is to pretend your a not.
Beasley: The story of a naive art student graduating into and unwelcoming world is almost cliche, but it does seem to point to something important.- Who among us had serious and/or specific conversations about what you would do after college before you started, or at least before you committed to a field of study? · Sep 1 at 5:28pm
Wow, growning up in western PA in the 70s/80s is like being from another planet. "who among us", my wife and I had this conversation, one daughter wants to study english the other art! When we were growing up, no one we recall went to college to study english/history etc. Military, straight to work in what was left of the Mills, teacher (primarily women), accountant, engineer pick one. Summer enrichment, skip year in Europe LMAO
I agree with Steyn, maybe we are just pessimists. This short blurb doesn't get the idea across, you really need to read the book, a thought experiment with a time machine stopping around 1900, 1950, 1970ish, now, future etc. I believe we are fundamentally regressing as does Steyn, he also asserts we could not currently put a person on the moon.
I have been in Tech since Reagan was president, frankly I'm amazed how impressed some of you non-techies are with what I consider gizmos, much of this is NOT increasing real productivity. Maybe a boon to the intellectual biz (see Dr. Sowells book) but so what, IT is a mess, mission/biz performance is generally decreasing. Talking to my daughter about her mac book maintenance, the fundamental OS was developed in 1969. When Salk cured polio at my alma mater, it was like him and 3 grad students in a dingy basement? Moon launch Von Braun and 12 (exageration!) hard-core ENGINEERS, I was in a course where they blamed the O ring disaster on a lack of emotional intelligence, PMPs, a bunch on non-sense Steyn discusses that I wont.
Interesting podcast as usual but disturbing picture, also don't like the slam on "western PA deer hunters, vote democratic to get checks"!??!? Seems awfully elitist and over-simplistic. Another take on the clinging to god and guns, they use to be referred to as the Reagan democrats, probably the hardest working people I've lived among
.... It didn't exactly blow us away because we were already using Xerox Dandelions (a raster screen LISP machine)...
Lisp ...awesome geek reference! Terrible news on Jobs.
Amuses me when people compare apple/jobs to M$/gates, and the politics/philosophy associated with them. The business models and products are polar opposites IMO. Many conservative talk show hosts during the Justice Dept investigations etc. felt we technology types should owe a debt of gratitude to Gates, I certainly never felt that way.
I can't think of anyone that contributed more to technology than Steve Jobs, even the "failure" of NEXT contributed to driving tech in a positive and innovative direction.
BTW I recommend the new book on google "Search and Destroy" to those on this thread. Also the new Mark Steyn book, he shares my belief that we probably could not put a man on the moon right now, folks in many fundamental ways we are probably regressing... Apple gives me some optimism.
You got it: "Managing a private business is a much different task than managing the federal government". It has been my experience that the worst government managers are straight out of the private sector.
