Dispatch from the People’s Republic of Washington State
Today’s Headlines:
- Local Businesses Hard-Hit by Burglars During Covid-19 Shutdown
- Inslee Extends Stay-home Order Through May
- You Can’t Lock Everybody Down, Say Protesters
This is what downtown Seattle looks like today:
Ray and I went to our local (six blocks from home) Costco today, and it was ugly. “Minders” everywhere reminding you to stay six feet away from others; the PA system repeating the message to follow CDC Guidelines; the notice stating that on Monday they will require all customers to wear masks. Shopping there is now no fun. I am a Costco shareholder, and this just makes me sad and angry.

I wonder if when the shutdown is ended, how many of those businesses stay boarded up?
I wonder if Inslee wonders that.
Meanwhile in Oregon:
That’s misleading. She renewed her declaration of emergency. The stay at home order is open ended so didn’t need extending. But the underlying point is correct. Oregon has relatively few cases and is being very slow to open up.
And you can bet that Brown and Inslee are NOT confined to their homes. Or denied haircuts or manicures.
Governor Kate Brown has nothing to lose. She cannot run for another term. This is the exact reason Oregon Republican State Senators, and some House Members head to Idaho to kill a legislative session.
He’s a rather curious fellow in many ways, and that doesn’t mean he’s curious. It wouldn’t occur to him to wonder, much less think. He has paid staff to think for him. We call him, ‘Dimslee.’ I hope to have a post soon with some further thoughts. Don’t hold your breath though.
I think her real name is KAREN Brown
Locked down Til July 6? That is horrible, even obscene.

What will the government do for revenue if people are not working or paying taxes?
Increase sales taxes…on all items but especially on gasoline, natural gas, electricity, water…
This is the question, isn’t it? As Mrs. Thatcher once said, “Eventually you run out of other people’s money.” They can raise sales taxes, but people won’t have money to buy anything, either, so that can’t last.
Welcome to Venezuela. Be prepared for power outages.
Sussh! Oregon doesn’t have a general sales tax. Yet.
Just in time to be too late to open up for the Fourth of July. It’s like the government is making an obscene gesture while shouting “ I got your independence right here!”🤬
I’m cancelling my Costco membership over the mask requirement.
Really sorry to hear that Washington isn’t doing more to help the Burglar Community in these difficult times.
I did see one story a few weeks ago about all the looting and break-ins at closed NYC stores. Other than that one story? Crickets . . .
Where else will you go? Costco is simply following an emergency ordermandated by either the local, county, or state government.
I don’t think fighting over masks is the hill to die on here.
If we want the state to release the restrictions, the mask seems a prudent part of steps to get those in a fearful frenzy to be less fearful and frenzied.
No one is injured by a mask.
I don’t know for certain what a mask does or doesn’t do, but I will follow that request in order to ensure our food supply chain is repaired. Me buying food is a critical link in MY food chain supply.
Big picture…
Officials can’t let those stories out because it would cause them to pay attention to actual crimes instead of fining and arresting normal citizens for crimes like walking outside of their homes.
My apologies for not being hip and up-to-date on the “KAREN” jab.
I agree. I don’t like masks either, but I’m willing to wear one (for a few weeks at least) if doing so will encourage people to get out and help get the economy moving again.
Yeah. Patrol streets with closed business, not parks and suburbs . . .
I probably should have added a link explaining the Karen thing.
Well that can be explained by the fact that the people in power simply don’t have viral matter or bacterial germs surrounding their skin and mucous membranes, unlike you and me.
Are they in a competition?
Me, either. But it might be a good hill on which to get a moderate case of Covid-19 or a bad headache.
For one thing, it kills facial recognition systems.
No. Masks are the hill to die on, and that is exactly why. “it’s no big deal,” “doesn’t hurt anyone,” etc… It is a nonsensical placebo, and so people concede because it’s no big imposition. No, I don’t wish to suffocate for no good reason. No, I don’t wish to have an itchy and uncomfortable device attached to my face. Yes, I want to see the people I’m talking to. Masks are to covid what plastic straws are to global warming, and if you don’t stand up to the little bits of tyranny, the mouse eats the cookie and demands a glass of milk.
And Costco is not mandated to require masks. It’s playing along because that’s the easy out.
Costco is made up of Big Leftists top to bottom, and they go along with whatever Dimslee mandates. I will remain a shareholder and a member, because this too shall pass.
However, with the PPE allocated to the “healthcare professionals”, what about us peons, who are required to wear PPE? The stuff is still in short supply! Catch-22. I can ask for an extra one at work, where I still refuse to wear one, keep it in the car, and use only at Costco. But I am on the side of Mr. Hammer above.
