The Queen’s Speech
The speech, which is written for the Queen by the majority, dealt mostly with Brexit and the problems of the NHS, which throughout the campaign was alternately described as the “best in the world” and an abomination — often by the same people and in the same sentence. A vote on the government’s Brexit bill, which would rule out an extension and set a final divorce date, is expected to come as early as tomorrow.

BoJo and Rand Paul should go together to the barber. Is all I’m sayin’…

The Queen’s speech starts at about 21:00
why do they all dress like Santa?
Don’t you mean why does Santa dress like them?
She’s remarkable for 93.
This ancient monarchy with all its pomp and circumstance is a major contributor to world stability and respect for tradition. Queen Elizabeth II has played her part to perfection.
Watched the video. Really wanted to see the Commons shut the door on Black Rod, but life is full of disappointment.
Chuck really looks old.
Put not your faith in princes and all that. But each time he pulls off a deed that everyone says he can’t, I can’t help but cheer.
If I had one wish that would come true, it would be to have lunch or diner with the Queen. I was about 4 years old when I discovered her and sister. During WWII, all the news casts in the movies showed the girls, and I have been following them and family all these years. I think I have mentioned it before, I felt sorry for them, and never wanted to be a princes or queen myself. I have so admired her grit and courage. Our presidents get 8 years max of exposure, the Queen has had a life time of it.
I think Mark Steyn sums it up pretty well. (He used to work with BoJo, at The Daily Telegraph.) In the short excerpt below, he’s comparing Johnson to the recently-resigned Canadian Conservative leader Andrew Scheer:
People underestimate Boris Johnson at their peril. Underneath that rumpled exterior, I think there’s an iron will and a strong sense of discipline.
Scotland is shaping up as a serious challenge to Westminster. I’ll be interested to see what Prime Minister Boris makes of it.
I don’t think it’s serious at all. Sturgeon is mistaking dislike of Labour for support for independence. It’s what politicians do. And she can caterwaul all she wants. She doesn’t have the votes in Westminster and with an 80-seat majority Boris won’t care. It’s not like he has to worry about the Scottish votes he’s already not getting.
I am so happy for Boris and his success, but I do wish he had at least brushed his hair before the opening.😅
Well, we’ll see.
What would you say if I told you he did?
He probably did brush his hair, to make it more untidy.
Uh, he needs a new brush? 🤣
Boris is just the right amount of trumpiness. I hope the two of them get along
She has a responsibility we don’t have: The Duty to Her people. A remarkable Monarch and woman.
My prayers are that she passes the Crown to William and not son Charles.
Not going to happen. Charles is next in line.
@Goldwaterwoman…. Ummm…. that’s what Boris looks like AFTER carefully brushing his hair…
I think BoJo’s haircut is trademarked, he has to keep it to maintain those rights.
Depends on who lives longer, though.
Not if she outlives him.
Maybe they already visit the same one.
From what I’ve seen, Boris is what Trump supporters think Trump is; he looks like a clown on the outside, but he’s secretly a chess master on the inside
Good point. Churchill wasn’t exactly eye candy either . . .
The interesting thing about ages is that if someone dies before 65, that’s considered too young and therefore tragic.
If someone dies between 65 and 90, that’s considered a fully lived life.
But if someone dies in their 90’s it becomes tragic again because they were so close to 100 that you feel sorry that they didn’t make it.
So Godspeed, Your Majesty. May you make it to the century.
Fascinating. I need a blow by blow account of some of the traditions. For instance, if they have that great cover (?) for the crown, why don’t they pop it on before they take it from the Lords’ chamber. And isn’t there something where they knock on the Commons to be admitted? I’ve got to admit I’m a sucker for this stuff. Maybe its the historian in me. I think anyone marrying into the royal family (looking at you Meeeeeghan) should have to sit through one of these before the wedding.
The Gentleman (or as of late, Lady) of the Black Rod summons the members of the House of Commons to the to the Lords’ chamber to hear it. When the Black Rod shows up to make the announcement, they slam the door in her face. Why? Because they can.
