Pelosi Caves, House to Vote for McConnell’s Border Bill
Despite the foot-stomping by progressive representatives, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi agreed to the Senate’s humanitarian aid package for the border without amendments. Once approved and signed by the President, $4.6 billion will go to the effort without Democratic strings attached.
“In order to get resources to the children fastest, we will reluctantly pass the Senate bill,” Ms. Pelosi said. “As we pass the Senate bill, we will do so with a Battle Cry as to how we go forward to protect children in a way that truly honors their dignity and worth.”
According to the New York Times, moderate Democrats revolted against the far left:
A last-minute revolt by centrist lawmakers ensured defeat for Ms. Pelosi’s efforts to toughen the conditions in the Senate bill. The moderate Democrats balked at a funding reduction for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, leaving the House floor in chaos and emotions running high. Ms. Pelosi was left with little choice but to accept the less-restrictive Senate bill, which passed on a lopsided bipartisan vote this week and would do far less to rein in President Trump’s immigration crackdown.
“We already have our compromise,” Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, said on the Senate floor, calling his chamber’s bill “the only game in town.”
“It’s time to quit playing games,” he added. “Time to make law.”
Liberal Democrats were left infuriated.
“No one should be advocating for the Republican proposal in the Senate if you’re in the House, especially given we had a strong vote from our caucus,” said Representative Mark Pocan, Democrat of Wisconsin and a co-chairman of the Progressive Caucus. “I just would hate to try to explain that back home.”
He later singled out the Problem Solvers Caucus, a group of 23 Democrats and 23 Republicans, on Twitter for their push to consider the Senate bill, asking “since when did the Problem Solvers Caucus become the Child Abuse Caucus?”
Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan, said, “We are really, truly creating a whole generation of children that won’t forget what we did.”
Cry more. Cocaine Mitch will use your tears to process another load of high-grade Bolivian marching powder.

Jon,
Just a suggestion but perhaps Pelosi could arrange to have AOC, Tlaib, Omar and a 50lb bag of sand tied together. Drop them in the middle of the Rio Grande and see to which side they try to swim back.
Not that it would matter to which side but it would be great to watch.
Regards,
Jim
So after last night’s trainwreck, are Democrats realizing they can’t be completely unhinged anymore?
Only in Washington can a bill to provide humanitarian aide to the border be labeled Child Abuse.
It seems like the moderate Democrats understand exactly where their voters are. They may not be with Trump but they are also not with the hard left.
JimS,
The Democrats not completely unhinged?? Is the Pope…does a bear…oh never mind!

Jim
Any money for a wall?
I’m stunned – prayer works!
I’m shocked how many far left candidates were on stage advocating open borders. Really? They think we won’t remember in a year or Trump won’t remind them?
What a silly question. This is McConnell’s caucus.
I hope this doesn’t sound alt-rightish but advocating for open borders while speaking Spanish for no reason makes me very uncomfortable.
So the Democrats held up humanitarian aid to people who need it (illegal though they may be) and then they accuse Republicans of being uncaring bigots?
Jim,
More sand.

He throwed Nancy right into that ole briar patch.
For most relevant stretches at most times of year, the verb is “wade,” not “swim.” Hence the need for a man-made physical barrier, since the natural barrier long ago shrank to more stream than river.
Perci,
75 lbs, 100 lbs? You’ve got to give them a chance if you expect this to be the kind of entertainment hoped for.

Jim
Jim,
Oh. Entertainment. Sure. What was I thinking?

This bill is just the latest case of the Dems saying we need to use a ton of dynamite to blow up the country and the Republicans countering with we need to cut a ton of red tape to save the country and we “compromise” by using only a half ton of dynamite at the cost of only adding a half ton of red tape. And on and on it goes. Nice victory.
Such is life. This country isn’t all that conservative. Because of that, there will always be constant compromises.
