The Eyes of Texas
The Baylor Lady Bears beat Notre Dame, the defending Women’s College Basketball champions, to win the NCAA championship Sunday night. The Lady Bears were solidly in control for much of the game, thanks to tremendous defense, led by their version of the Twin Towers (think classic Houston Rockets). Then their biggest star player, Lauren Cox, got tangled in her footwork with a Notre Dame player, and her knee went in an entirely unnatural direction.
Cox collapsed in agony and had to be taken off the court in a wheelchair. After an x-ray, she came back to the bench with a heavy brace and crutches. The comfortable double-digit lead evaporated, as Notre Dame not only got hot but took advantage of the weaker defense under the net. Finally, the defending champions took a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter.
That lead did not hold, as the Lady Bears clawed their way back to a tie. With 3.9 seconds left, they took a two point lead. Then they fouled Notre Dame’s best clutch-shot player, forcing her to make two free throws for a chance at overtime. When the first shot circled the rim and then went out, the game was sealed. Baylor ended the luck of the Irish: 82:81.

Now the attention turns to Texas Tech, with the Red Raiders facing the Virginia Cavaliers this Monday night for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The men’s and women’s games are not the same. I only hope we see the same level of team play, as opposed to star play, in the likely faster, certainly more physical game Monday evening.

Not that I’m choosing sides, but: “Guns Up!”
Exit question: might President Trump invite both champion teams to the White House at the same time? Basketball teams are much smaller than football teams, so it would not be hard logistically, and the NCAA championship games are within a day of each other. I cannot imagine Texas college teams, should the Red Raiders men join the Lady Bears as champions, striking a “resistance” pose like the professional punks.

I tuned in for the last 4 minutes or so…a very exciting ending. Congratulation to Baylor and the Lady Bears.
Guns up! I’m rooting for Tech tomorrow night.
Wreck ’em, Tech!
Get your guns up!
It’s good thing for women’s basketball that teams other than UConn are finally winning.
Not sure why, but Ricochet seems a little better when Texas Tech is winning
The title of the post is the name of the fight song of Baylor rival UTexas. Perhaps that is a subtle honor to the recent NIT champs. Hook ‘Em! We may have a bball sweep by the state of Texas. Wreck ‘Em!
It was the Virginia Cavaliers’ night. The game went to overtime, the lead traded hands and then Virginia outgunned the Red Raiders in the final two minutes.
Both teams mounted an unrelenting defense the entire game. There was no quit in the contest.
