Rope-A-Dope

“I was the Concorde of boxing. I was at a higher altitude than the rest, moving faster than the rest but you just have to get used to riding on jets again when you can’t ride Concorde anymore.” … Muhammad Ali

The “Rumble In The Jungle” was one of the world’s most watched (estimated 1 billion TV viewers), and talked about, sports event ever. A heavyweight prize fight between the reigning and unbeaten World Heavyweight Champion, George Foreman, and the challenger, former World Heavyweight Champion himself, Muhammad Ali. On October 30, 1974, in what has been called “arguably the greatest sporting event in the 20th Century”, in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), Muhammad Ali, 32 years old, coming into the fight as a 4-1 underdog in the later stage of his career, delivered a major upset victory over the undefeated 25-year old Foreman.

One of the great story lines to this amazing victory (alluded to in the subheading above) was that the Greatest, Muhammad Ali, was not in the prime of his career any longer, and thus he needed a new and different strategy in order to beat the younger and stronger Foreman. And thus was born the “rope-a-dope”.

This strategy was formulated by Muhammad Ali himself. He had only mentioned to his trainer Angelo Dundee that he had a ‘secret plan’. As the second round began, Ali started leaning on the ropes with his back and was freely allowing Foreman to punch him. Ali blocked most of the punches with his arms and leaned heavily on Foreman when they would clinch. Ali would push Foreman’s head down and taunt him, whispering in his ear. He got Foreman off his game and tired by all of the ineffective punches that he was throwing in anger. By Round 8, Ali was ready for the counterattack on the very visibly tired Foreman. Ali went on the offense and delivered a five-punch combination that took Foreman to the canvas. He was not able to rise in time before the eight count and the referee signaled the end of the fight.

On May 17, 2017, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (due to AG Sessions’ recusal), signed the authorizing document for the Special Counsel Investigation of the Russian Government’s efforts to interfere in the Presidential election of 2016. For almost 2 years now, President Donald J. Trump has endured a battery of punches from all sides – the democrat party; the press and the institutionalized members of his own Party.

Perhaps, the President is entering his own Round 8, following his own version of the rope-a-dope … My Turn ….

Let’s get ready to RUUUUUUMMMMMMBBBBBLLLLE!

    Foreman’s quote regarding that fight:

They call it the rope-a-dope. Well, I’m the dope. Ali just laid on the rope and I, like a dope, kept punching until I got tired. But he was probably the most smart fighter I’ve ever gotten into the ring with.

Don’t expect similar humility from this crowd.

A great analogy. The way Trump has carried on, not just doing the business of the country but doing great things in the face of slings and arrows from all sides including his own, has been a wonder to behold.

    Columbo,

Is there anybody in the current news media that can even do a decent interview with Trump. Something that is neither negative nor useless. Something that is worth watching.

    Regards,

    Jim

    Columbo,

Very nice interview. However, this kind of proves my point. Trump had to go to WKRP (OK OK it was  700WLW) in Cincinnati to get a decent interviewer. Nobody in the National News is able to stay with Trump. Our Dave Sussman did a very nice job with VDH. Interviewing is an art. It takes brains but also the ability to not inject oneself into the interview too much. The interviewer isn’t the subject.

The National media is so hopelessly bent out of shape they can’t just relax and relate to the President of the United States. Then they complain that politics is divisive. It’s their coverage that is totally negative and combative. How could politics appear anything but divisive when presented by them. Cosell was anything but a doormat or a cheerleader. Yet, it came across how much Cosell enjoyed interviewing Ali. Too bad the media just can’t handle Trump.

    Regards,

    Jim

I’d be interested in hearing PDT relate how his business career(s) has affected his outlook on government. I can guess by the deregulation that has occurred but would be interesting and am curious if he had specifics in mind with his cabinet or let them go at it.

He’s rather blunt/honest when answering questions. Would love to hear stories of his donations over the years and how he views that as ‘a cost of doing business’. I’d like to hear stories of shakedowns and what reforms should be instituted.

You left out what Stormy Daniels said:

“I looked at the Mueller report, and found it hard to swallow.  For me, that’s quite a professional disgrace.”
