Quote of the Day: Fathers and Sons
“Every father should remember one day his son will follow his example, not his advice.” – Charles Kettering
I worked as an engineer for many years before shifting into technical writing. I have three adult sons. All three are engineers. I did not advise them to be engineers. I advised them to follow the careers that would serve them best.
My youngest had a rockier road than the other two. He often said he wanted to be an engineer in the worst way and was managing to do that. Yet today he has turned that around. He is finishing up his second year designing refrigeration systems and walk-in coolers.
Tuesday was also his birthday. Happy birthday, son. I am proud of you.

Engineers are practical people and enjoy the art of designing things that are needed. You should be proud!

Related quote; I have no clue who said it:
“your children may not listen to you, but they are always watching.”
I’m always reminded of that when I read this story about a grandfather and a wooden bowl. (More information about the story can be found here.)
And of course, there’s also this rather haunting song:
Sometimes sons want to be the exact opposite of what their father was.
Happy Birthday Seawriter’s Son!
Sounds like you and Janet did a wonderful job raising your sons, Seawriter. Congrats! (I did remember her correctly; didn’t I? If not, I’m so sorry.)
You did.
