The Democrats Lose a Vote

My US Representative is a Republican nonentity who has been in office since 2003. I’m not a Republican, but I’ve voted for him every election because he has the sterling attribute of being not a Democrat. Even though I receive his taxpayer-supported newsletter in the mail occasionally, I can’t tell you what he stands for. I’ve never met him in person, but he seems to have all the personality of a potted plant. A plastic potted plant.

This is a highly Republican district, so in most elections the Democrat Party runs a Who? against him. This year is different. His opponent is a dynamic and charismatic ex-Army helicopter pilot. She obviously has a lot of resources and support. My wife and I have had at least a dozen mailers from her, and every other YouTube video I watch has an ad from her preceding it. What have I heard from the incumbent? Zilch.

I’ve looked at what she is advocating, a lot more than I’ve looked at the Republican. Of course, her policies are the same liberal argle-bargle as any other Democrat. I’m not going to vote for her, but she still may beat the incumbent. Frankly, he deserves to lose. If she was running in 2014, I may even have voted for her.

My wife was going to vote for her. Like me, she is pretty disdainful of both political parties. Like me, she is not impressed with the current Honorable Member. Even so, she is for Ted Cruz over Robert “Beto the fake Hispanic” O’Rourke and thinks gubernatorial candidate Sheriff Lupe “Where’s My Gun” Valdez is an idiot. The woman running on our US House district, while a traditional Democrat, is neither an empty-suit poser nor a bumbling moron.

And, in a normal year, it wouldn’t be a big deal. In 2008, the Republican dink who was our Texas House representative got beaten by a Democrat. Two years later, a much better Republican was elected to the seat. I wouldn’t mind our current US Representative getting defeated if we end up with a non-potted plant Republican in two years.

Then the Kavanaugh hearings came along. After seeing the repulsive behavior displayed by the Democrats in the Senate, my wife said (screamed, actually) “How could I ever have thought to vote for one of them!” And, just like that, a certain Democrat lost a vote in a tight race.

Is your Republican rep from California originally?  He sounds like the Cali GOP before the state went blue.

Nope, Texas planted and sprouted (and laminated).

JosePluma: Postscript: I suggested we go to the Democrat campaign office and get yard signs for all their candidates. I would then spray paint “LYING DEMOCRAT SCUM” across each of them and leave them posted on my lawn. My wife dissuaded me, but wouldn’t it be fun if an entire neighborhood did that?

That is a great idea! I wish I’d thought of it first…

Yes, it would be extremely fun if an entire neighborhood did that.

I’m too rural for my area to be called a “neighborhood,” but I am tempted to try it just in my lawn.

Make sure your wife tells the Democrat’s campaign exactly what you have told us. That’s got to count, right?

Good idea. Maybe if Democrats started hearing first-hand accounts that their antics are costing them votes they could help temper the extreme behavior that seems to have become their norm.

I’m in the neighboring 23rd CD in Texas, where we have the female ex-Army intelligence officer running as a Democrat against the incumbent ex-CIA operative Republican. So national security all around.

The 23rd is considered to be the only consistent swing district in Texas, so it’s always close and always a bellwether on how strong the passion is on both sides of the aisle — it flipped Democrat in 2006, when Rick Perry won re-election with under 40 percent of the vote in a four-way race, then flipped GOP and back in 2010, ’12 and ’14 based on presidential year turnout. With Trump now in the White House it will be interesting to see if the off-year election passion has flipped, but thanks to fracking, CD 23 is a lot richer than it used to be, and more than the other Texas border districts, which have Democrats as representatives. The national Dems being so against fossil fuel may end up being the determining factor more than the current Kavanugh fight in Washington, as people vote for the party that won’t threaten their new high-paying jobs.

I tried to put a post together yesterday about an acquaintance who let me know they were switching allegiance from D to “conservative” after this Kavanaugh fiasco. It was fear for her college-aged son that did her in, not past interactions with me. I just couldn’t organize my thoughts enough to tell the story and gave up after 3-4 attempts. I hope it is a large trend that reaches across the country.

The trouble with that is the media will twist it around and report that the evil Republicans are vandalizing signs without interviewing anyone.  That’s one of the reasons I’m married; my wife’s superego often talks sense into my id.

In that case I don’t want anybody to tell them just yet.

This was the first year I voted a straight Republican ticket. I’ve always voted for the candidate I felt best about (who has consistently been a Republican for the longest time) but not voted at government levels where I hadn’t heard from or heard of the candidate.

After the bizarre opposition to Trump and the blatant hatred of conservatives I decided to adjust my ethics accordingly.
