Quote of the Day: Grandparents
The important invention in a way for the human species was grandparents. Grandparents were the beginning of culture when we could sit around the cave fire and the grandparents would sing songs to the children and the parents would be out hunting so having three generations was what made us what we are. – Freeman Dyson
I’ve joined the club. My first grandchild, Janet Rose Lardas, was born Thursday, July 19. Feels great. Named for her paternal grandmother. (My Janet grew heritage roses.)

Congratulations! Do you mean July 19th?
Congratulations to you, your son, and daughter-in-law.
Yes.
Some scientists think that the reason women live longer than men is the Grandmother effect.

You are going to have so much fun! All the “grandparently” vibes are wonderful, but from what I’ve seen, the bond between grandfathers and granddaughters is extra special. Congratulations. And a beautiful name for a beautiful baby.
Some have argued that people are the only animals that recognize their grandchildren. This may or may not be true, but reaching across the generations certainly is necessary for the building of great societies and civilizations.
Congrats! We are expecting grandchild number 8 in October. It is a wonderful thing to be G’rents.
Awesome. Great. Well done. Congratulations.
Congratulations Grampa! And a lovely tribute to Janet.
Way back when, I called my Mom in the middle of the night to tell her that she was a Grandmother. Her line was priceless ….
”A granddaughter. That’s wonderful. It’s God’s way of thanking me for not killing you all the times you drove me crazy!”
Congratulations,
extreme fun ahead.
However as to the grandmotherly thing, Mrs. OS is conflicted as our latest granddaughter (who by the way is brilliant and suffers from extreme cuteness, in my biased opinion) is in Minneapolis (a suburb of there) which is a 13 hour drive away. We recently returned from a week long visit and I can tell that despite daily skype visits, Grandma is already pining for a return trip. I’m trying to hold her down to 2-3 visits per year with promises that Rachel will be old enough to spend summers here soon since she is now 2 years old. Any suggestions?
Grandparents are so important – congrats on your new role, and love her pretty name!
Congratulations, I love being Grandpappy, and I’m sure you will too.
woooooo!
Congratulations! Grandparenthood has been the happiest time of my life.
My mother was also a Janet.
Congratulations! You will be a joy to her as well as she is to you.
Oh, Seawriter! How absolutely wonderful—blessings to teeny-weeny Janet Rose. There is nothing like holding a little baby in your arms, and saying the beloved’s name again for the best of all possible reasons. Love for two.
And maybe sneak in small squeeze from some weird old chaplain lady in Maine?
I can do that.
Congrats!
Congratulations! My husband’s first great-grandchild – Elle – was born last August 8. May you live to see Janet Rose’s first child!
Outstanding! Congratulations!
Mazel tov! My middle name is Rose, named for my Nana, and my little daughter is named for her as well. Long may she bloom, little Janet Rose…
Wonderful news. Enjoy, Grandpa Sea.
Good, @Seawriter. Good.
Congratulations, Seawriter! I hope you get to see her frequently.
Congratulations , Seawriter , my first of six is now 11, she was born 6 weeks after my wife passed , she is an absolute joy . We were diving in waves together just this afternoon.
It’s great and I agree with the philosophical take, just not diapers. I’ve 11, plus a great grandson and another on the way, and I’m currently taking care of four of the younger boys today while Mrs. Walton has the three older girls in NY seeing their first Broadway show. Life is good and they’re discovering it right in front of us.
happy to see that your grandsons had the good sense to pass on the Broadway show
Doesn’t stab, blow up, shoot, slice or any worth while things, of course not.
Your comment is funny and true, but I must say that I saw Matilda on Broadway a year or two ago and it was fabulous. Really really fabulous. The choreography was stunning and the songs were clever and musical and the kid who played Matilda was knock-out talented and only 8 or 9 years old or so. Amazing.
Not all Broadway shows are created equal…
