”Go listen to politics!” — My ~2.5-year-old son about eight years ago while I was trying to potty train him
I had just discovered some political podcasts that I liked and he had taken note. He seemed to think that I would leave off potty training him at the suggestion of peace, quiet, and the opportunity to listen to another podcast.
He tried this several times but I finally got him potty trained, politics notwithstanding.

Apparently they’re mutually exclusive.
I’m currently potty training #4 and #5, so I’ve got poo on the mind.
This reminds me of a quote I recall from an article in the express.co.uk about on a report published by Tony Blair’s think tank, the Institute for Global Change in which it was said populism could become the “new normal” in Europe and “transform public policy in radical ways”.
The report’s co-author, Yascha Mounk, said: “2016 was the year that populism went prime time, but as our data makes clear: this rise started well before 2016.
“This populist wave has not crested and unless politicians managed to identify and counteract the structural drivers, populism will keep garnering strength in the years to come.”

FYI, When they get to their teen they start giving you another kind of Poo. And you will find yourself wistfully recalling the simpler and more basic kind of poo. Hopefully you will will be granted grandchildren who will fill their lives with poo, and the great poo cycle will be complete. You will smile at this poodiciment.

Ah, “They’ll-learn-when-they-want-to parenting finally runs out of patience,” thinks I.
My friend Monica still talks about all the times she’d call to chat, isolated-Mom-to-isolated-Mom. As soon as I picked up the phone and said hello, my baby daughter would start to shriek. A few minutes of shrieking would end abruptly, and we would have at least twenty minutes of silence in which to discuss the state of the world…
See, my daughter had figured out that I would give her an extra feed if it meant she’d be quiet long enough for Monica and me to dissect Iran-Contra or the benefits of Phonics or whatever. So she trained me. The phone rings; Mom lactates.
Not, thankfully, to this day.
