Breaking: Mass Shooting in Las Vegas
Police responded late Sunday night to reports of an active shooter situation at an outdoor country music festival near Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. In a briefing held just after 3 am ET, a public information officer for the Las Vegas PD said that one suspect is down. He advised everyone to avoid the Las Vegas Strip. From ABC News:
Officials at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas told ABC News that it had at least 20 victims with gunshot wounds right now, with the number expected to grow. The hospital did not provide information on the victims’ conditions…
“They were firing from somewhere high, and they were unloading clip after clip after clip after clip,” a witness told Nathan O’Neal, a reporter for a local news station, KSNV News. “It was hundreds of shots.”

Update (6:50 am ET): Las Vegas Police now saying more than 50 people dead and more than 200 injured. This makes it the deadliest mass shooting in US history. The gunman has been identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, NV.

It’s been a few hours now, since the shooting. People are in critical condition. It appears that a number of the concert-goers helped the injured. I’m praying for those at the festival.
Horrible, just horrible.
It just gets worse. Fox is reporting 20+ dead & 100 injured.
This is pretty ugly.

So I’m watching the coverage, it’s horrible. Listening to that footage however, that sure sounds like automatic weapons fire. The length of those bursts don’t seem like magazines to me (belt fed?).
Would be interested what some of our gun enthusiasts/military members think.
So. Someone with a death wish and such powerful hatred for his fellow man that he would do this. 64-year old retirement home resident, so maybe terminally ill or something?
What is there to be done when people go this wrong?
Appears to be a prohibited possessor
not that it helps
Are Vegas Ricochetti okay?
This horrific massacre is the lead topic of my podcast this morning. I’d like to invite all of you to be part of the conversation.
Thank you.

This is a good question. The only answer has to be that we don’t know. The left always does know. Their first answer is gun control. As if controlling the tools that are used for horrible purposes will control the type of mind that is responsible for such an act. Sometimes we just have to pray that the types of such tortured minds are not on the increase. It appears that maybe they may be. And the best answer to that is to have more mental-health facilities to segregate these people from the rest of us.
Mental health services to meet their needs so they don’t feel the need to do this sort of thing.
Yes, it sounded like full auto, and yes, the bursts were quite long. Don’t know at this time, but it could be anything from a slide-fire AR15 with a drum mag to a full-on belt-fed machine gun (something that costs $10k and up to own and is very, very restricted).
24 hour rule is in effect, so my commenting on this will be limited, but this one is hella scary.
In the mean time, now might be a good time to look into getting some basic trauma med training to back up your CPR.
You DO know CPR, right?
Not mutually exclusive…
I was just thinking about police training, as I am listening to more and more about this. This is not Mayberry any longer (if things were ever that way). We need police trained everywhere for all kinds of situations. And it reminds us how much we depend on these folk, as well as all first respondents. The police deserve a world of thanks for all we expect of them. And they probably do not get it.
I heard an interview with a concert goer who said at least it was a country concert so there were lots of former military and law enforcement in attendance who took immediate actions to help the wounded and others.
50 plus dead 400 injured so far say sheriff on TV right now. My sister just last week in her small town state worker had active shooter training….what has happened to our world??!
Arutz Sheva is reporting that he was a convert to Islam.
Something is up – it’s been several hours (they are reporting that the guy is a 64 year old, white guy going through divorce-or that matches name on hotel registration – that profile is made for the MSM nowadays) there’s a picture of the girlfriend but not of the murderer?
@addictionisachoice has checked in “safe” on Facebook.
What a thing to wake up to. Last night I went to bed completely unaware that this was happening. Woke up to read over 50 dead and 400 injured in Vegas. Madness. I assume we do not yet know the motive of the shooter, but what sane motive can there really be?
We got a pic. This a bad shot from the first page of Google results, but it matches other pics I’ve seen on social media. He’s a 64 year white male with a 62 year girlfriend who worked at the Mandalay Bay.
Best round up of info I’ve seen so far: http://abcnews.go.com/US/las-vegas-shooting-suspect-stephen-paddock/story?id=50225619
That’s about, oh, 500 yards or so from the hotel to the festival. He was spraying and praying. He wanted to rack up a body count, and he offed himself when the cops show up, as these losers always do.
My sincere and honest wish is that the media never speaks of him again, but I know that will not happen.
These people kill in order to become celebrities, and our media helps them become just that.
His brother says “this is not terrorism.” Interesting how “terrorism” has become a euphemism for “Islamist violence,” yes? That’s what I’d call “successful branding.”
What a world. Prayers for the dead and their loved ones.
He could be a terrorist without being an Islamist if the violence was perpetrated in the furtherance of a political goal. My coworker thinks we can’t rule out Antifa (though I stress that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions without evidence See @livingthehighlife‘s post above.)
But why attack a concert if you are Antifa? Normally domestic terrorists choose targets with political significance. The baseball game with congressmen or the federal building in Oklahoma.
In this case, because those people are potentially Trump voters? No Trump, no KKK, No fascist USA?
There’s really only three reasons someone does mass killings.Political motivation, personal grievance, or they’re on drugs. The second would probably ruled out due to the huge number of victims. If the first is ruled out, that leaves drugs. The modern mass shooting is about 30 years old and so is the SSRI antidepressant, which carries a suicidality risk in its warnings. For some, that risk becomes a risk for homicidality. Many infamous mass shooters were on these drugs.
Eh…seems like too much of a stretch Los Vegas anit exactly Trump country. Terrorists aren’t mentally disturbed (in the classical my dog told me to do it way) so their motivations are fathomable if horrendous. Take the Dallas shooter he was mad at cops, so he shot cops. He didn’t go to a concert and shot people thinking there might be cops there. No this man is either severely disturbed and therefore incomprehensible or he was driven by an ideology with a more general hate. So I am far more likely to believe he was an Islamist (though there doesn’t seem to be any proof of this) than to think this was Antifa. Just based on the choice of target.
I live in Las Vegas, too. I found out about it all when I was bombarded by phone texts from my family around the West. I have to go to school now to teach fourth grade. One of my fellow teachers’ husband works for a promoter and was there. She’s already checked in that he is safe and home. Good Grief!!! I guess identifying the plot and theme from our reading text isn’t going to be the main topic in my classroom today. What a horror…
