What Did Stephen F. Hayes Say to His Kids After Trump Won?
Earlier this year Stephen F. Hayes was featured on the Ricochet Podcast and partly defended his Never Trumpiness by sharing uncomfortable discussions with his children. So, what did he say to his kids after Trump won and how does he feel now? During this transparent interview Steve also talks about free markets, crony capitalism, repealing Obamacare, regulations, the three reasons why the Obama administration should be considered an abject failure and a Ricochet member question.
Stephen is (the new) editor in chief of The Weekly Standard and author of two New York Times bestsellers: Cheney: The Untold Story of America’s Most Powerful and Controversial Vice President and The Connection: How al Qaeda’s Collaboration with Saddam Hussein Has Endangered America. He is a regular Fox All Stars panelist on Special Report with Bret Baier. Before joining The Weekly Standard, Hayes was a senior writer for National Journal’s Hotline. He also served for six years as Director of the Institute on Political Journalism at Georgetown University. His work has appeared in the New York Post, the Washington Times, Salon, National Review, and Reason. He has been a commentator on CNN, The McLaughlin Group, the Fox News Channel, MSNBC, CNBC, and C-SPAN. Before becoming editor in chief, Hayes long served as a senior writer at The Weekly Standard. A graduate of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and DePauw University, Hayes was born and raised in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

If a member of the Rabble Alliance went cruising with David Sussman, would he conduct a Whiskey Politics interview with them to allow the telling of their story of the celebration with their kids following the election of President-Elect Donald Trump?
I can’t speak for Dave Sussman’s future cruising or interviewing plans, but if you’re looking for a podcast where a pro-Trump Ricochet member gets interviewed, you might want to check out this episode of Flyover Country. In it, @ryanm interviews @robertmcreynolds.
No imminent plans for a future cruise @Columbo but we also interview some original pro-Trump folks in this series. And agree with @RandyWeivoda, @RyanM‘s interviews are fantastic. FYI, the interviewed Never Trumpers, to a person, were all extremely pleased with Trumps cabinet picks and want his success. Hayes himself states just that.
“How do I talk to my children?” Well I sure didn’t say,”he’s such a bad person I find myself incapable of defeating Hillary and will instead work to defeat him in the ludicrous hope that conservatism will rise eventually.”
I told my son that I didn’t care for many of Trump’s words or deeds but that he was the only chance our country had for my son to have a decent future which means the right to bear arms. Hillary was going to kill everything I loved and sometimes you have to man up and vote for a defective person.
Can we do a circulation and revenue comparison for the Weekly Standard for 2015/2016 and then 2017/2018 ?
I’ll bet you a cup of Bill Kristol’s tears, vintage 2016, that they lose at least 25% and even more significant, their relevance.

I said something similar. My youngest (11) son came to the polls with me and as I asked him to go down the ballot without hesitation he loudly announced “Trump!”. Older cardigan-lady precinct worker must’ve heard my boy because the smile she greeted us with was replaced with a disapproving scowl.
We high fived each other walking back to the truck.
Ann COULTER says that Trump has a history of using the same movements whenever he’s reporting on someone who is unhinged, non handicapped people. And the movements Trump made did not correlate to the reporters handicap. That could be the reason.

So this guy just gets his news from the propaganda pages and then opines. How am I supposed to respect his opinion?
And what is it with the political IMDb stuff? This is the only place I know of that does that. Podcasts too. Strange practice.
@DocJay, if you look at the web traffic to the Weekly Standard and NR during the campaign you see how NeverTrumpism devastated their following.
Typically, the go-to political journals for each side pile up unique visitors and page views through the summer and into the homestretch.
Instead of the reliable 35-50 percent increases after the convention both magazines lost about 35-40% of their April 30 traffic. Rankings which should have vaulted plunged. Here are the Standard’s numbers. Brutal.
And not surprising, as the GOP gathered with varying levels of enthusiasm and resignation around Trump and against Clinton, the two major conservative journals were disdainful of Trump and his supporters. Yes, there were exceptions but the disdainful tone for the GOP tribe was palpable. Kristol’s comic campaigning clearly hurt the Standard.
Worth noting that Against Trump had no such effect. I thought the Against Trump move was well-timed and brave but executed in a rather mediocre manner: a series of short, hasty pieces; all left jabs and no rights landed. Some punches were pulled: most notable Glenn Beck, of course. What a clown. Traffic to each site increased sharply up through Trump’s clinching wins after Wisconsin.
Then both the Standard and NR kept putting points on the scoreboard for the other team. (Okay, half-points is more statistically accurate.)
And the fans left the ballpark in the middle of the fifth when they couldn’t tell who was playing for their team any longer.
And now one general manager has been replaced.
Indeed!
NR’s traffic may have also been affected by turning the web site into malware. Click bait sites run smoother than they do.
Very good interview, Dave. I like Steve Hayes and know that he is an honorable man with a lot of credibility with me. I appreciated hearing from him. Thanks.
